So I have to say I'm kind of surprised I'm not seeing much effort on bringing eyefinity to the 4800 series. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it all take place in the driver? Nobody's gonna attempt to hack it in? Yes you can only run two displays on it with most 4800 series but I can think of games where it could still be useful. Any thoughts? I'm planning on getting a 5000 series in awhile anyway, but just thought it surprising there isn't some enthusiast somewhere working like a mad scientist. :D

In a sense it is probably do able in software, but my guess is it is a hardware capability of the 5xxx series that makes it possible.

I always wondered the same thign considering the 2 Dual DVI outputs have the support for 4 monitors but no one ever put that support in.

I haven't really read up on it but does anyone know the actual Tech on the Card (probably a question for Brent) that allows for this? is it a Display Port capability/specification?

its the display port addition, that allowed the 4800 series to have eyefinity.

And besides, to maximize profits why have previous generation hardware support it?

4000 series can't do 3 displays.
It's a limitation of the hardware.
You can use SoftTH to simulate Eyefinity but it won't be the same.

The 5000 series can do Eyefinity thanks to the 3rd displayport output. For some reason it seems that it would have been too expensive to do 3xDVI or something.
Here's the chart of the output architecture for the 5000 series.

Technically eyefinity doesn't have to be 3 or 6 displays.

There is "eyefinity" for 2 displays. It's just a display group of some number of monitors.

Yes it looks bad (2 monitors with the bezel being in the middle...), but it's technically there... I don't know what the point of it would be for a 4800 series card save for novelty.

matrox triple head 2go device. the most expensive unit will only let you stretch to three 1680x1050 resolution monitors max.

I could see a benefit in plenty of RTS games or any game where you aren't forced to look at the center of the screen.
