This has happened several times since I purchased the card. Occurs randomly, but only when the computer is rebooted. Usually if I reboot it again after it loads windows, it loads fine. Sometimes, I've had to turn it off for a few minutes and then boot it up and it will be fine. This does not happen all the time. Its very infrequent, but I'm getting annoyed since its been doing this for a long time now.

It doesn't always do this design. Sometimes the output is like a checker board where the squares are small, 1/2 cm x 1/2 cm, and spread out.

Make sure the cable to your monitor isn't lose or something. also try re-seating the card, cleaning the contacts on the card, blow the dust out of the agp slot.

this solves most problems like this
 
Well, my problem is that it may not happen again for another couple of weeks, or even months. I can install those drivers but that would require the I reinstall a lot of other stuff as well which i'd rather not do. I'll see how much time I have later.
 
having the same problem with my 9800pro 128mb. tried it on my friends comp and no artifacts and he has almost the same setup as me. this also happens to be my 2nd card thru rma. i've tried almost everything i can think of. using a 7500 atm and its working fine go figure not a happy satisfied ati customer atm.
 
I have the same problem very randomly. Once in a great while, I'll restart and everything will be jumbled and distorted like that.

No idea what the deal is, though.

Sapphire Radeon 9700 Non-pro, catalyst 5.1 drivers. FYI, this problem has been happening since I bought the card, and occurs maybe one every three months or so.

Yeah, thats basically my situation. I hope to be upgrading my system soon so I'm going to live with it a little longer.
 
My AIW 9700 does that every once and a while. Usually turning off and then back on my LCD (connected via DVI) does the trick. Every now and then, on a reboot it locks out the controls on my LCD, too.
 
You are both correct, I am venting and the 9700 is a great card, what I should have said that the origional poster is a piece of shit.

Maybe next time he wont insult someone without having an intelligent comment to follow.
 
it was my powersupply you guys getting artifacts definately should check it out. vantec stealth 520w suxors. whats a life expectancy of a psu anyway? its been over 2yeras for me already.... time get a real one if i cant get this replaced.
 
Well, I came in here to post my own similar problem (I have an AIW 9800 pro), and I saw this thread, so I figured I'd share it here.

This happens fairly frequently with the 4.11 and 5.1 drivers, but it wasn't before with the 4.12's. But now it is. It happens during various games (doom3, farcry, hl2, ET) at random. When it happens, I can still hear the game going on, and can still give it commands (shoot, move, ctrl alt delte, etc). I formatted the other day, and it still does it. I get absolutely no crashes, lockups, bluescreens, etc, and besides this problem, my system is rock stable. Prior to last November I had a GeForce3, and had no such problem. I'm not overclocking, either.

My psu is a 300w that came with this case almost 4 years ago. I'm guessing that could be the problem?

Asus a7n8x deluxe
3000+ barton
512 ddr2100
ATI all in wonder 9800 pro, 4.12 drivers
