i know they have hd's that connect via usb and you mount the hd inside a case outside of the tower. do they have such a thing for pci slots?
 
As far as I know, they do not offer anything like that. An external PCI Box would still require another connection interface like USB or Firewire to connect to the PC and that would cancel out any kind of speed you would get by using PCI. They do have external USB sound cards and such but nothing like what you are referring to. What type of PCI device do you want to install that would require an external mounting box?
 
I've never seen anything like that....except for SCSI enclosures, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
 
I've never seen anything like that either, and I doubt I ever will. The latencies and logistics of making an exernally enclosed pci slot would be huge, and not worth the trouble most likely. If they did make it though, the modding potential would be endless. :D
 
PCI is a bus and has all the pros and cons of a bus.

What are you trying to get outside your box? Do you have a shared AGP/PCI or PCI/ISA slot you could use by removing the expansion bracket on the card? We used the latter option in Fujitsu ErgoPro Pentium 2s converted to cash register controllers (just PCs with a shedload of serial ports and custom graphics card).
 
Look up "PCI backplane" in Google. That's what you're looking for.
 
this kind of solutions are very rare, thus very expensive.. I don't think it's worth the money.. unless you're loaded and really need those extra slots..

and you'll have one hell of an expernal solid-state storage solution (and probably an incredible pricetag)

Solid-state disk with integrated normal hard drives for ongoing data backup and internal battery backup for 20 min. Fastest storage solution available! Probably costs a pretty penny though...
 
thanks for the replies. unfortunately i'm trying to transport a pci soundcard to 2 different computers. but i think the person who mentioned the latency issues is right that a pci->usb conversion wouldn't work.
