Ok, Ive had like 5 ide hard drives laying around for years with nothing to hook them up to, until today. I got a external hp dvdrw drive, with is ide. So i rip it apart, and hook the hard drives into it, None will show up, all error 10 in device manager under windows xp and windows 7. So i plug the dvdrw up into it and it works shows up and all, the hard drives are getting power, but none will show up. can someone please help me

The external DVD drive is probably meant for DVD drives only. The firmware probably locks out hard drives.

ive tried a few external dvd drive cages from different manufacturers and they all worked flawlessly, the internals are just a converter chip which changes the signal from ide to usb

It's a possibility that your particular enclosure is designed to work with only optical drives.

See if you can find a IDE/SATA-to-USB cable adapter. That's the easiest way to determine whether to problem lies with the enclosure or the drives themselves.
