I got a killer deal on 8 300gb 15k RPM SAS drives that I'd like to use for my backups and will be in hardware RAID10 configuration.

Looking for the best way to connect 8 drives to my system with an external enclosure that has a built in expander, and power supply. I have a LSI RAID card with only internal ports but I don't mind putting the cable through the back of the case (made for running things through) to connect to the drive enclosure. I would need the cable too as I only have the breakout to SATA cable at the moment.

What enclosures are people using?

What about a DIY solution? I have extra power supplies, but not sure how to get them to turn on/work without being connected to a motherboard. I'd also need an expander and power splitters.

Ideally it would be nice to hold 10-12 drives for future expansion, but 8 drives is fine as that's what I have already.

I actually have a couple old systems/motherboards, and cases I can probably hack up too, although if I DIY I'll probably fabricate my own enclosure out of lexan or aluminum to make it as small as possible, and as cool with fans like the Norco cases.

What about using the SE3016 from Rackable?
My LSI 9300 MegaRAID SAS 9361-8i has 2 internal ports so I could use 1 of them, and an internal->external adapter to connect to the Rackable enclosure??

Would this limit my speeds in RAID10 with my 8 x 15k RPM drives?

The enclosure seems the most affordable, and expandable to another 8 drives.
 
Well I ordered the SE3016 and will load it up with my 300gb SAS drives, and then maybe another 8, and then in the future upgrade to 6gb/s if needed.
