EVGA Step-up

This EVGA Step-Up program is a bit misleading don´t you think? I was looking that I could change my GTX 580 Classified Ultras to GTX 680s by only paying shipping. So a couple of days ago I hit to #0 in queue. Then I found out that I would need to pay about 130€ (including all shipping) per card to get new cards. I am not paying that, because there isn´t so big leap between Fermi 1GHz + and GTX 680. Plus I would get lower VRAM.:( I will probably wait some beefier cards.

How is it misleading? You have to pay the difference in cost going from an older lesser priced card to an expensive higher priced one. I think it's an awesome deal for a card that out performs everything.

Umm...yep, that's what the Step-Up program is. You pay the difference in cost between the two cards plus shipping (which that shipping charge is pretty high anyway).

You don't just get better cards for free, lol.

I fail to see the part where you were mislead. It looks like you originally paid $420.08 for the GTX 580 Classified and are upgrading to the GTX 680 which is $499.90 and so you're going to pay the difference in price, not the difference in performance. Did I miss something else?

Oh and while we're on the subject, the only thing misleading to me about the eVGA step-up program is that you can only step-up up to a card they decide to add to the list for the step-up program. I called eVGA the other day about it to see when the 4GB cards were coming out and if I could step-up from one of the 2GB GTX 680's and was told yes if it is within 90 days and it is added to the list. They should just let you pay the difference and step-up up to any card you want that offers better performance, especially when it is cards of the same gen being released with more VRAM.

Deal? When I would better off selling my old cards then going to shop and buying new cards. Sorry, but I don´t get idea of whole Step-Up program then.

So you can sell your cards for more than you paid for them retail? Good luck with that.

Can you actually fetch EUR 420 for your used 580?

How much did you pay originally for each of the GTX 580 Classified Ultras?

I paid 538€ per card. I can pick up GTX 680 from store 480€ and I would still get 400€ from these cards. EVGA card cost 499€ plus shipping both ways and they would give 420€ per card. So making Step-up would cost more and I would need to be about 2 weeks without cards.

Step up program is solid, OP is just silly

*edit* I wouldn't pay 400 for a used 580 3gig. I'm sure I'm not the only one either.

One thing I am confused about also is, in your post, you said it would cost 130 Euro (correct? Euro?) per card to do Step-Up. In the screenshot, it says it would cost 91.82 USD (including shipping), which is just under 70 Euros.

Either way I would agree it's not really a great deal considering how far the retail price has dropped on those cards. They are the 3 GB editions and nicely overclocked so really you wouldn't see a massive difference anyway. However, none of that means the Step-Up system is flawed and in fact you somehow interpreted it as getting free upgrades minus shipping, which is obviously not the case.

OP has them SLId, that quote from evga is per card

Not USD, it is euros. So 92€ (including one way shipping). It would cost about 38€ send card to EVGA. So total is 130€ per card. They recommended sent them separately.

Oh okay. Still...almost $40 to send one card? Something does not seem right about that to me. I guess it's a EU -> US shipping thing? Still...

I guess I thought it was USD because it's $499 USD MSRP here. You EU guys are getting screwed... :(

I thought eVGA used the purchase price, not their estimate on current value, with the Step-Up program?

Yeah some prices are silly. Insured packet to Finland to Germany cost about that amount. Other way around it is much cheaper(Germany to Finland).

I thought so too. Though I am wondering how the price dropped from almost 540 euros to 420 euros in 90 days? Maybe the OP overpaid? EVGA uses their own prices I think, I don't think it's based on a third-party vendor.

Also of note is that you ignore tax and shipping in the original card calculation, and that is clearly stated on the site.

That 540€ doesn't include shipping, but taxes yes. Anyway step-up doesn't look very lucrative for me no matter how I look it.

If you assume shipping was 20€ and VAT was 25%-27% (don't know what country you're in) that puts the original price at just about 400€. eVGA doesn't seem to be charging tax for this, so consider the tax you paid last time to cover this "exchange" of parts.

VAT is 25% over there? Damn.

So yeah, you'd basically be paying 625 euros per card for the 680 if you figure in tax. Step-up doesn't seem so bad, then.

Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade but the step-up program seems like a fair deal. If you could sell it used and get more money then do that.

I know USA EVGA step up takes whatever YOU PAID, and whatever it says on the INVOICE....not whatever the current market value is...you also have to consider, tax, shipping & mail in rebates are not included as well

What it sounds like is the OP included tax in the figure of the original price he gave (despite Step Up clearly saying it doesn't include tax) but at the same time not including tax/shipping in the cost of a new card. So really it's an invalid comparison.

thats what i am thinking as well...the picture in the OP shows he paid $420 for his 580 classy...but in another post, he says he actually "paid" $538...so thats over $100 worth of shipping, tax, and mail in rebates...which don't count towards step up anyway

This program is awesome. No idea what there is to be confused about. I just wish more companies adopted this program

Hmm, doesn't seem so useful to me. You get 90 days to step up and they have limited models to step up between, they never include classified or superclocked SKU's (to step up to). You can only get reference.

So if for rexample you buy a reference 680, you can't step up to anything except perhaps a 690 if that is released.

I guess its useful if you're buying old SKUs or buy something 3 months before a new gen comes out. Otherwise, I'm not seeing it as useful at all, you can't step up to a classified or hydro copper.

its useful if you purchase say a GTX 560Ti, and find out you need extra horsepower to run BF3 or what not...then you have 90 days to decide to step up to a GTX 580...its pretty damn good to get full price back on a USED part (your 560ti)

lol EU has been getting screwed for years when it comes to computer hardware, hell steam is even worse, they pay the exact same price as we pay in the US. so if a game is 60 USD on steam, its 60 Euro which is actually ~80 USD.

as far as the step up program goes it works. only the 680 is the fluke since Nvidia was forced to undercut AMD's price of the 7970, if Nvidia had their way it probably would of been priced near 600 dollars and thus the step up would of worked for the 680. its a good deal if say you were stepping up from a GTX 580 1.5GB or lower card to a 680 but not a good option when going from the 580 3GB. either way it only requires a little common sense to not use it or use it if it benefits you in your specific case.

1) The Step-up programs is awesome, you people complaining are nuts. It basically allows you to sell your (used) card to EVGA for the full retail price you paid for it, rather than having to sell it at a loss and deal with buyers in the secondary market which can be a hassle.
2) The price they are giving OP on his used card should be the pre-tax price, he probably submitted the total cost and when EVGA reviewed the invoice they deducted taxes/shipping, as any reasonable human would expect.
3) Imagine you paid $450 for a GTX580 1.5GB 2-2.5 months ago, you can now pay $50+shipping and get 30% more performance out a GTX680. How is that not a good deal?

Of course the program is limited to 90 days, otherwise EVGA would be losing insane amounts of money.
