So my GTX 570 is still eligible for step up and I noticed that there is the GTX 570 HD that costs all of $3.50 more than what I originally paid for my GTX 570 (no rebates at all here).

I kind of doubt it, but is there really any practical reason to favor the GTX 570 HD over the GTX 570? Unless maybe you're case can't take a 10.5" GPU... I already confirmed with eVGA that it cannot do single card three-monitor gaming so that's out of the question at least.

I believe the HD version can use 3 monitors for productivity.

I believe the only difference is the HD version includes a DisplayPort output.

Yeah, the DP output means nothing to me . I was hoping that maybe the non-reference design ran cooler or quieter or (as we now know is not possible) it would afford me a single card Surround solution.

Seems like trading is just a bad idea for me, this time.

Case cooling isn't an issue for me; I've got plenty of airflow. That being said the HD doesn't have any tangible benefits for me so I'll be exhausting outside the case for a while.

Both cards have 1280MB of RAM. 3D works on any nVidia card and you still need two physical GPU die for more than 2 monitors. I see they recently released a 2560MB version of the HD, but yeah I don't need the RAM.

Sadly I think we can leave the thread at this...the only reasonable step-up is a GTX 580 and that's a bit too rich for my blood .

from when I was researching it was just 3 monitors vs 2 support

at the time both was the same price, I just went with the reg one for my needs.

if you going to do 3 monitors, i say the HD but for me I be just doing two at more for the time being

The GTX570 HD doesn't support 3 monitors at a time. Like all nVidia Fermi GPUs, it can only support 2 displays at the same time. You may certainly connect more than two, but you'll only be able to use 2 at a time, per GPU.

There are a few Nvidia cards that can display 3 monitors at the same time, but you cannot game on them. Nvidia GPU's do support 3 monitors.
Some can support 4 like this one.

got 2 580's and was excited to use 3 monitors at once. Wait whats this? Have to disable SLI to enable the 3rd monitor, even in 2D mode!?!?

Takes longer to disable SLI than it does to disable a second monitor and enable the 3rd (projector) so even after getting a second card I am still doing the same disable monitor then enable projector gag. PITA everytime I want to watch a movie

I use the projector to play simulation games so it needs to be plugged in to the high end card for when I switch it to be the "primary" display
