I ran into big decision lately. Is 285 gtx SLI worth it? right now I am running HD3870x2 X2 and I am pretty happy with it. But I ordered 2 x GTX 285's. Is 285GTX better then 9800gx2 for example?

And is it better then CrossfireX HD3870x2?

best bang for buck i would say is sli gtx 260 core 216, right now you can get 260 around $140+, OC it a bit, the performance is not too far off from 280

what about GTX 295?

gtx 295 = sli gtx 285?

I'd get a 295 and pick up another 295 sometime down the line. There's pretty much nothing it won't run. 2x285 are still beaslty and will be just a tad bit better performing than a 295 would, but same deal.

Alright. I just don't want to feel disappointed with my 285 GTX's. I always was pro ATI but in call of duty 4 I notice fps drops once in awhile and it is annoying when you play professionally.

Thank you guys for the answers. I love this forum. All answers are so quick.

Does your motherboard support SLI? Only reason I ask is because you mentioned Crossfire as well and unless you're running an X58 chipset, its one or the other (Crossfire or SLI, not both).

Gigabyte X58 unlocked crossfire/sli. You get the choice after a bios upgrade.

THIS. I had this only with the 192 versions, and it rocked everything. 69 FPS avg in Far CRY2 everything maxed, 20 FPS in Crysis Warhead everything Maxed....u get the idea.

lol, gtx275 is more like the half-piece of 295, as it came out after the 295 :D

OP, nothing wrong with 285 sli, especiall at high-res. Although beware, not ALL games are supported in SLI but they won't work with any Nvidia-based dual-GPU solution anyways.

actually you can get 4890's for 176 a piece right now shipped and they are very aggressively trading blows with GTX 285 SLI which Is going to run you about 550 (on sale) instead of under 360 for a pair :D

Amen. The meager performance improvement offered by the GTX 285 SLI set-up in no way can compete on the price basis with a 4890 Crossfire set-up. The way the market is right now, the only two dual GPU set-ups (4870X2 and GTX 295 included) I'd recommend are GTX 260 core 216's, or 4890's (provided one has an SLI/Crossfire compatible board).

I read that 2x285 > 295 because the 295 is 2xGTX 280 on a single card using 260 core and memory speeds as well as the slightly narrower memory interface.

the thing about going with 285's over 4890's is that you can go 3x285, which should best even 2x295
(not to mention 2x285 is better than 2x4890 imo given the heat output and energy consumption of the 4890)

what about GTX 295?

gtx 295 = sli gtx 285?

uh no the gtx 295 is not sli gtx 285's.. gtx 295 is a hybrid gtx 260 sli.. they are using the gtx 280 gpu but with the 448 bit bus and 896mb of ram.. so in the end 2 gtx 285's in sli would murder a single gtx 295..

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 dual-GPU graphics card features 1792MB of memory which corresponds to the memory capacity of two GeForce GTX 260 boards. However, unlike the Radeon HD 4870 X2 which is literally two Radeon HD 4870 products stuck together, the GeForce GTX 295 seems to be more of a hybrid, sharing specs of both GeForce GTX 260 and 280 products.
The GeForce GTX 295 gets the same core, memory, and shader clock speeds as the GeForce GTX 260. Yet its core configuration is more similar to that of a GeForce GTX 280, with each of the two GPUs featuring 240 SPUs, 80 TAUs (Texture Address Units) and 28 ROPs (Rasterization Operator Units).

Just popping in to say that I have a EVGA GTX 260 216 superclocked, and that I just picked up a second one a couple of weeks ago and I'm extremely happy with it.

Solid ~60FPS in Far Cry 2 @ 2560x1600 with 4xAA and everything else maxed. Haven't really played any other games to truly test it out, but it scales wonderfully. From the tiny, thoroughly unscientific tests that I did with FRAPS, my framerate was nearly double in SLI over SLI being disabled

the best bang for buck is defo 2 x 260's but for more money the 4890's in crossfire are what i would go for instead of gtx285's in SLI, they're way overpriced for what they are.

Went from GTX 285 SLI to 4890CF and now I'm back to GTX 285 SLI and I'm sticking with them until I see what 3 series from Nvidia or 5 series from ATi has to offer. 4890's raw power but not as smooth as a set of 285's same frames in either or. Just my experience, but as always different strokes for different folks.

Were your 4890's overclocked? I'd expect some noticeable loss of performance and especially lower minimum frame-rates if your 4890's were not at least 950 mhz on the cores. I'd also be running at least a 3.6Ghz core2 to rule out CPU bottleneck.

Were your 285's overclocked? If they were overclocked then... well... no fair? :(

Other than that... meh... I'm still not surprised. GTX 285 > 4890.
