I can't decide which video card to get so I was wondering if the people at hardocp could help me. Anyways, I've been reading some reviews of both video cards and they seem pretty close to each other performance wise. I know that the 6800 has 4 more pipelines and higher memory bandwitdth but so far I haven't been able to tell the difference those make. In every test I've seen the two cards are usually 5fps apart or maybe 10 at most. The price for the 6600GT is 249.95 and the 6800 is 329.95 so I'm not sure if the performance gain is justified by the $80 difference. Also, I'll need this card to last me for about a year or maybe a tad more because afterwards I'll be upgrading my entire computer.

Just for reference here's the rest of my setup:
AMD Barton 2500 @ 2134
512MB Corsair XMS PC 3200 (I'll be buying another stick of 512 in the near future)
Radeon 9500 Pro

So, if you guys have any suggestions I'm open to anything, I'll be looking for something that can play BF2 at a higher resolution than 800x600 and be able to take on Morrowind 4 when that comes out :p

Oh, what I should of said is this is in CAD and not US, that should make more sense now ;)

$80 canadian is what? llike 2 cents american? :p

Get the 6800, it'll blow that pos 6600gt away for the extra cash.

the 6600GT is near identical in performance "out of the box". the 6800 is slightly faster, but we're talking marginal. with anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering the 6800 will usually pull ahead of the 6600GT but not $80 ahead in my opinion.

now, that being said, the 6800 will unlock from 12 to 16 pipelines a good ammount of the time. if you are able to do the unlock and get a good overclock, THEN your $80 is going to start working for you. if you do not plan on overclocking, the 6600GT is a clear winner in price/performance.

Allright, well thnx for the suggestion, just to make conversion a little easier the prices in USD goe something like this :
249.95 Canadian Dollar = 205.146 US Dollar
329.95 Canadian Dollar = 270.806 US Dollar
80 Canadian Dollar = 65.65988 US Dollar

I wan't to overclock the card as much as I can get it out of the box, ie. I don't want to change the cooling on the card to get the maximum overclock. I've also read about unlock it to 16 pipes and it seemed pretty easy as a soft mod. But on the other hand about half of the posts said that this could and most likely will damage your card and a couple people said that if you turn on 16 pipes and you get artifacts you can't reverse the process and that once you do you will still be artifacting in default mode also. I'm just a little worried about that, if the procedure was safe than I would definately do it but I don't wana ruin a new video card two days after I bought it. Can anyone back up the 12 >>> 16 pipe conversion?

I did it when I got my 6800 a while back, but the unlocked pipes cause artifacts. So I was able to reverse the procedure and change it back to original, no problem.

I think people are overclocking the hell out of their stuff and causing damage. I don't think that you will permanently damage your gpu by trying to unlock it using software.

Also I would definitely get the 6800 over the 6600 :p

6800. I used to have one, but wished that I woul have spent more for the 6800gt so now I have an x800xl

6800's OC to around 400/800. 6600GT's OC to about 550/1.1. The 6800 OC's a little better in my experience.

also note that the higher clocks of the 6600GT does not equate to better performance than the 6800, since the 6800 has 4 more pipes by default, and 8 more (double) than the 6600GT if you can unlock them.

Also, don't we see this exact same topic like 4 times a week pretty much?

I'm guilty of it too, i asked the exact same question about a year ago :D
