Aside from having plastic chip protectors to ship CPU's... can anyone think of an everyday item, or something I can just go and buy at a store somewhere, that would work to ship CPU's? I have a couple that I'm about to throw on Ebay as a lot. Thanks... couldn't think of anything myself.
 
Antistatic foam (it's pink) + cardboard works pretty well, as long as you tape it together real tight. If the CPU doesn't have pins (eg socket 775 stuff) then you can skip the foam... but still tape the cardboard tight!
 
Ive used those plastic rectangle baby food containers...just the right size with some as bag around the CPU, then tape it securely shut.

Are we talking LGA CPUs or PGA? For both antistatic foam just to be sure you don't damage gold contacts...but PGA needs a bit more care.
 
Yes, i completely agree with that both LGA and PGA need care but PGA needs more care as compare to LGA..

Dollar store shopper, too? ;) Those are pretty much what I'm using... as my ex ran a daycare. LOL. I was just worried about static...
 
Also... they're bigger than I want the container I'm shipping to be.. and there's multiple chips (possibly in the same container). I guess I could wrap them in an anti static bag and then put them in the plastic container... but I really wanted something I could just ship in a bubble wrapped envelope.
 
Cardboard and foam, dude, cardboard and foam!

Corrugated cardboard is standard at 1/8" thick. Add about 3/16"-1/4" of pink foam, one CPU, and lots of tape. You should be at about 3/8" or so (the foam squishes) if you really 'torque down' the tape, 1/2" otherwise. If you're willing to pay far too much for it, go to Radioshack and buy "conductive foam" from them. It's black and way coarse, but it does the same thing as the pink eggcrate crap that you would otherwise want.

If you're using a chip where the pins are in the socket (eg 775) you can dispense with the foam and just use the cardboard/tape method. 3/8" tall at the /most/.

BTW, I've gotten more than one CPU from eBay that was shipped with this method, and they all arrived in one piece and in functional condition.
