Hello,

I’m looking for some thoughts on a wee problem. One of my friends has contacted me to let me know that his PC is displaying two errors at the POST stage:

1. CPU fan error
2. bootmgr is missing

Now I’ve seen both errors before (on other machines) but independently. It seems strange that these errors have appeared at the same time, so I’m wondering whether these errors are symptomatic of a bigger problem.

Any thoughts?

bigger problem would be that the motherboards dying..but he could try resetting the cmos by pulling the battery.. also checking the cpu fan header with a different fan to see if it works and running the boot drive in a different system to see if its still working..

Looks like a possible battery issue. The BIOS had reverted to an earlier state which re-arranged the boot order, and fan control settings.

I replaced the CMOS battery about a year ago, they should last longer than that, shouldn't they?

I've never had to replace one and some of the machines I repair for friends have had the same battery for 5-6 years.

Only lasting 1 year is not normal.
