Wait wait wait, isn't this just it doing its normal shit of trying to update/patch all your games in the library at once or does it do it all the time....I don't have any of those set to auto launch when Windows starts so maybe I'm not seeing the problem......

Is this the same launcher you have to use if you got GTA 5 free from the makers?

Anyway what's new, you are a resource to milk and all your PCs and smartphones are just powerful enough to run collect software and Ads.

That's the Rockstar launcher. Not worth keeping it installed for one game imo but it's required to play it as far as I know.

Tried the EGS over Christmas for the free games. I did not like it at all. Very anti customer. Glad I uninstalled it.

I don't go to bed with no whore and I don't wake up with no whore. Close your launchers when not in use people.

So this is independent from the other "bug" that seems to be affecting Ryzen CPU owners (maybe others) causing a significant rise in temperature, perhaps. I could spend all day detailing how Epic has been actively harmful to PC gamers (despite throwing out freebies here and there which seems is enough to win the acclaim of some), so these issues are of no surprise. However, I think its worth asking that for all of the data sent, the heat... what is it actually doing to benefit the user? EGS has fewer features on its launcher than even the ho-hum first party launchers out there like Origin or UPlay/UbiConnect, much less something like Steam which offers incomparable features, community, and general usage/openness vs any major competing platform. So the fact its using so many resources and harvesting so much data is even more striking, given it officially does little more for the gamer than updating certain titles.

While I'd encourage others to break away from EGS for their myriad business practices and concerns (ie bringing by-contract exclusivity to PC titles is enough to damn them, but also things like failing to support Linux not just for their client but also for games that offer a Linux version on Steam, when purchased on Epic, do not grant such access - Slime Rancher is a good example here), but if you must continue to have any interaction with them then I suggest using Legendary - https://github.com/derrod/legendary - an open source alternative to the EGS launcher.

I haven't allowed a game launcher to run in the background ever. I open it when I need it and shut it down when I'm not using it. Problem solved.
Doesn't stop the fact it's sending data and increases CPU (and case) thermals and fan speeds, and throttling earlier as a result, while the launcher is running (ie whenever you're playing a game from the platform). A game session of 2 hours? 2 hours of god knows what data sent goes knows where for god knows what purposes while increasing thermals and throttling your system for 2 whole hours.

If you're OK with that, come over, you can bend over in my house too 😗

If you're really worried about throttling while gaming, maybe you should be complaining to the AAA companies for making shitty console ports rather than optimizing the game for PC.

Up next, my computer gets hot when I actually use it for computing something!

Sending data back should be more transparent about what it is and why it is being sent. I think everyone would agree.

Tried the EGS over Christmas for the free games. I did not like it at all. Very anti customer. Glad I uninstalled it.

So since I installed EGS, I got the following for FREE:

GTA V
Civilization VI
Alan Wake
ARK: Survival Evolved
AC: Syndicate
Batman Arkham Series (all 3 games)
Borderlands 2 / Pre-sequel
Cities:Skylines
Darksiders 2
Hitman
Just Cause 4
Kingdom Come Deliverance
Metro 2033 Redux
Pillars of Eternity
Subnautica
Watch Dogs 1 and 2
World War Z
...and many other random indie titles

How exactly is that anti-customer again?

But what if its really cold and you want your shit stolen? seems epic and / or a whore in your bed would solve both of these issues.

What's stopping it from collecting and sending the data back to HQ while you are playing?

The fact that I cant do what I want with my games once purchased. I.e. download them to my PC and play them without using a game store launcher.

Customer relations is built on trust, it's apparent the Epic does not trust their customers.

But it's OK, they're not the only game store to buy from. There are better options. For instance, GoG and Steam both let you download the game, you keep it, it's yours. You do not need an internet connection or a game store launcher to install or play it.

So showering you with presents gives them leeway to do shady shit? That's not a philosophy I live by. One bad and one wrong doesn't cancel each other out.

Besides how long have they been running these givaways? 2 years? How many games they gave out? 30? None of which was of any interest to me, or I already owned them. But even if I wanted one game. I'd rather pay for it elsewhere. My loyalty can be earned, it cannot be purchased.

I just closed it down on my 3900x and also got a decent temp decrease and a 4% drop in idle usage.
Yea I don't use it on startup anymore. Shit was raising my temps by 20c keeping threads busy lol. Now I am at 30c idle vs 50+c idle. Read it somewhere and was instant drop in temp. So now I only use it if I am going to launch a game. No more auto start.

Isn't that enough? And the topic at hand of sending significant amounts of data to unknown servers without permission and using high cpu time when idle isn't shady enough to taco? I'm disappointed.

What are they sending? For all we know it's poorly written code sending them the hardware in your system many times over. Right now, I haven't seen any analysis of the data being sent.

Not quite the issue here. It currently uses ~5% CPU usage in an idle state. Steam uses ~.5%

Something is clearly broken (as they have already admitted). The solution obviously isn't "just close the launcher when you're done".

Considering they have one of the most popular engines and games on the entire planet at the moment, that's probably pretty likely.

Or they're the worst criminals ever who make it screamingly obvious they're exfiltrating mass data for sinister purposes the likes we cannot even comprehend.

🤔🧐

LOL, they shouldn't be sending any data, poorly written code in a software with full access to your computer isn't a reassuring excuse either. Isn't there a limit to making excuses? Can't you just admit, that something is fishy here? I'm sure they'll say it was "unintended behavior" even if su mi kow at a tencent facility, is now analyzing your porn viewing habits

Not true for Steam, most games use Valve's DRM. Unless it is one of the few games that doesn't have DRM, but still requires you to download the client and create a log in. EGS is the same. If the game has no DRM, you can download it and then don't need the client anymore. Steam offers the DRM for free, I am sure Epic does as well. This is why most games use Steam DRM. It doesn't stop crackers, but it stops the common user.

But the majority of games will have some type of DRM. If you want consistent no DRM then you need to head to GOG.

As for the bug: meh. They'll patch it. Steam had bugs in the past, I still use it. Customer service pretended they "ran out of keys" and waited 3-4 days to activate a game I bought on directly in the Steam client years ago. It was probably a bug. They fixed it.

people are just god damn stupid man, can’t fix them all. Always someone complaining about something. Basically, if it’s not steam, it’s trash. So dumb.
