I just put together a new computer and am looking for an external drive to use a backup. I have a single 500 GB drive so would like it in that size and with eSATA if possible. I was wondering if buying something pre-built like this Seagate FreeAgent Pro would be the best or should I build my own using the Antec MX-1 enclosure picked from this thread and this WD drive from newegg (it was the cheapest WD which I think are the fastest)? Thanks for any help in advance.

Unless you find a fantastic deal on a dedicated external drive I recommend using an enclosure.

you might also consider something like this.

just installed one of these in my system and you can get more carriers and just plug in.

got mine off of ebay, new in box for $17 with shipping

I say make it, you have better control of what goes inside the enclosure and the quality of the enclosure.
