enabling hyperthreading question

can you enable hyperthreading in winXP after putting in a new CPU, or the only way is with a fresh new install? or can XP automatically detect and enable HT these days with the latest service packs and patches? I haven't upgraded anything CPU related in a while and if possible, I don't want to do a fresh re-install of the OS and all my apps/games

the potential CPU upgrade in question would be from a 2.4B to a 3.0E. btw, how much of a general performance boost do you guys think that would be? mainly used for gaming and a good amount of weekly DVD/CD burning. motherboard is an ASUS P4P800SE with 1 gig of some corsair PC3200, video card 6600GT
 
I didn't do a swap of CPU's like that, so the closest thing I can relate to is that the system I have at work came with Hyperthreading disabled in the BIOS. I went into the BIOS and enabled it and WinXP SP2 had no trouble with it.

I believe I've head of people having trouble with doing this before since it makes changes to the HAL, I believe. I will not say there will be problems as I don't remember where I heard that it "could" cause problems. Hopefully, someone else will chime in soon.

I had an abit vt7 with a celeron 2.8GHz w/ the latest bios. I swapped out the chip for a 3.0 p4. The HT option wasn't there before with the celeron, but it was there and enabled with the p4. I didn't have to reinstall anything, and actually didn't have to re-activate windows IIRC.

hehe, sorry about not responding yet...I don't actually have the new 3.0E yet, because I was holding off on ordering it until I found a sure answer to this question. I'll reply back with results when I get it in and install it
