Are you guys familiar with those black plastic paper/sheet that they put in laptops in areas that can potentially short out from 2 pc boards touching.

An example would be a laptop motherboard where the sodimm ram is plugged into the board. They usually have this plastic material that is placed between the ram and the board and it prevents the two from shorting out.

Hopefully you guys can get me the name of this or know of a place that sells this material.

Not sure of the name but you should be able to find it at digikey.com or newark.com

No idea where you can get that exact stuff, but if you don't mind a little extra thickness you can use teflon from http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=15357&step=4&showunits=inches&id=223&top_cat=181 if that isn't thin enough another decent insulator is one that dupont makes under the brand name kapton; the smallest quantity I could find online was on ebay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Polyimide-Kapto...ultDomain_0?hash=item5885f78e84#ht_1281wt_709

What amount and size do you need? What are you going to be using it for?

note: I'm not affiliated with either company, just linking what I found thru a quick search.

Thanks guys for the ideas, I like the ebay item the best so I might try it.

Anyone else with any ideas, throw them up.

I think this should work fine, in the link below (scroll down and click on ELECTRIC INSULATOR when you click the link)

http://www.mcmaster.com/#polyamide-and-polyimide/=6aywst

They state this:

Effectively resists flow of electricity. Commonly used in housing or mounting of electrical components. Generally resists at least 500 volts per .001 in. of thickness.

I think this will work fine since its .017 thick which shouldn't be to thick and will prevent the video card from touching my motherboard and allowing a big enough barrier. That and will be using this to prevent the custom copper heatsink from potentially shorting out on the heatsink

Yup, looks like it's Kapton though $8.77 for a 12"x12" sheet is a bit on the expensive side. I didn't realize McMaster sold it but it's not surprising since they sell many things I don't know about :)
