I think everyone called it. Starting March 17th, ESO will be going B2P.

http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/2015/01/21/eso-heads-to-consoles-june-9th

Get ready for our console launch on June 9th, and start exploring Tamriel with no game subscription fees on PC/Mac March 17th.

For the first time in history, you’ll be able to explore the legendary world of Tamriel with your friends on console. We’re excited to announce that The Elder Scrolls® Online will be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One worldwide on June 9, 2015 as The Elder Scrolls® Online: Tamriel Unlimited™! In the latest and biggest Elder Scrolls game ever made, you can choose to adventure alone, quest with friends, or join an army of hundreds in epic player vs. player battles as you explore and discover the secrets of a persistent Tamriel. And with Tamriel Unlimited, coming to console on June 9th and PC/Mac on March 17th, 2015, you will no longer be required to pay a monthly game subscription to play ESO.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited includes all the great gameplay from the original PC/Mac game, plus all the updates and content additions, including the exciting new Justice and Champion systems. If you’ve ever played ESO, you’ll be invited to return to the game and experience everything new in the world without game subscription fees. If you’re new to ESO, you’ll make a one-time purchase of the game and then continue playing without restrictions for as long as you like.

In Tamriel Unlimited, you’ll be able to purchase optional downloadable content, and the new in-game Crown Store will offer convenience and customization items. If you choose, you can pay a single monthly charge for our premium membership, ESO Plus™, to receive monthly in-game benefits and a monthly allotment of crowns to spend in the store. Our team remains committed to providing a great experience to all players, and you can expect continued, regular updates free of charge in addition to our new store offerings. You can read the full press release for more details.

In celebration of these two big announcements, we’ve released the final entry in our four-part series of cinematic trailers, The Confrontation. Enjoy!

Not necessarily. Probably means that you can buy leveling boosters, pvp exp boosters, etc. It could be P2W if they start selling weapons and stuff also.

This fully explains the removal of the product off Australian shelves recently. Loved all the speculation that alone caused. :D

I was going to try it that one person working on the game really put it down though....

F2P...Hahahahaha

This move was predicted last May (not by me, though)

Not F2P, you still have to purchase the game to play. They just made the subscription fee into a "premium" fee for monthly benefits.

Cool, so does this mean PC xbox and playstation players can all play together? If so this could cause me and a lot of co workers who are spread across systems to give it a try

Not a chance in hell

Playing an MMO at this point in its lifespan reminds me of the last 20 minutes of inception.

Does this mean that if you have an account / characters on the PC version, you don't need to buy the PS4 version? I can use the same account? That would be amazing

I've been wanting to go take a look at all the patches and changes since launch, but...ehh...haven't been willing to put more cash into it. And they haven't done any 'come back for 3 days for free' type of promotions. At least this way I'll be able to spend a bit of time there and decide if it still sucks or not.

"Convenience" items...
Sounds like they're inserting P2W.
Not P2W, I can't remember the name for it, but its basically P2BG, meaning pay to bypass-grind.... if that's a thing! ;)

Games are then usually balanced so that the grind becomes exponential. So progress initially is very rapid and entertaining, but then it becomes longer and longer and longer as the player is more invested into the game and their "accomplishment".

The grind then by design becomes extremely tedious, so they allow you to speed up this grind if you pay money.

Basically the game goes from "FUUUUN" to "FUUuun" to "Fuuun" to "fun" to "meh" to "ugh!", but the average person at this point is like "well I've already come this far building my character up" and many are willing to plunk down big bucks to experience the "FUUUUN" again.

It works, but it sucks. I much prefer a flat rate subscription to play, so there is no desire to reduce the fun of the game on purpose to encourage payment.

As soon I tried the beta, i knew it was a flop. then, the other day I found it wasn't made by the same people that did Skyrim.

pfffffffffffffffttttttttttttttttttttttt...................just make a coop skyrim w/ modding. Jeez.

Ive been waiting to pick this up on PS4, as I don't feel like sitting at my desk to play for long hours onward.

All I have to say is, thanks PC players for testing it for me!

Guild Wars series did pretty good with the non subscription base play, we'll see how it goes.

Their new justice system looks interesting.

P2W nowadays has a beyond literal meaning in which people are referring to game play affecting advantages via money spent.

The "boosters" you mention which convey a time advantage can be considered among this. If two players of equal ability play an average of 40 hours a week, the one who is buying boosters will be ahead and essentially bought an advantage. Just like if someone bought a weapon with higher stats, they bought an advantage.

This, seriously. A multiplayer TES game is a wonderful idea, and an MMO is the worst possible way to go about making that happen. Give us 4-player Borderlands style co-op and call it good.

I don't really care about things like booster packs, I don't really consider it P2W. Particularly because there is no Utopian multiplayer game in which everyone is otherwise an equal skill with equal playtime, and the only modifier is the items you've unlocked. The way I see it, if you've got two players who have unlocked everything, and one bought them and the other earned them, my money is on the person who earned them having a significant advantage by way of experience. As for the people buying these day one, I don't think the advantages provided are even that significant, and within a few days of a games release the hardcore players will earn the same things others have paid to unlock and everyone ends up on an uneven playing field regardless.

If your selling things that give an advantage that can only be acquired through a pay wall, that's P2W IMO, and that I'm not a fan of.

Every individual certainly has (and is entitled to) their own personal tolerance levels and which they also then need to weigh against the other merits of the game. However I always point this out because I hate (and extremely disagree with) the literal/semantic based counter argument which gets bought up (eg. you can't literally buy a win) as this avoids the real argument and discussion pertaining to the matter.

You're tolerance level of P2W certainly isn't uncommon or unreasonable but at the same time those that don't want to be at a disadvantage in terms of ability or effort level required to acquire those items aren't being unreasonable either.

In terms of MMOs in general though they are designed where there is not set "cap" in terms of an end game. You'll tend to be ahead if you purchase advantages given a same effort/ability level. Also there is obviously the conflict of interest from the development side that game implementations caters to encouraging these purchases.

Certain though MMOs even without any official "cash shop" (such as the good old days) aren't free of this issue however due the third party market.

In terms of multiplayer games in general there are plenty of examples of games in which there is no carry over match to match essentially, as such the determinant factor between players is limited to individual ability.

Game was a fail before it even started. A TES game with a good combat system? LMFAO...

The only thing that ever made the TES franchise good was the storyline.

Storyline doesn't get the high ratings either. Mods make it for me. Actually lore is good though.

People said they wanted an Elder Scrolls MMO. They didn't. They want skyrim but bigger and with a lot of players.

I enjoyed the beta but IMHO the game doesn't do a great job of catering to ES fans or Hardcore mmo players. So the end result is "Meh." from both sides.

To me this game is a big case of listening to what players say they want and not actually figuring out what players want.

I would pay $60 right now for the exact same skyrim or fall out games I already own but with 2 player co-op added. If they wanted to put in some extra effort and add bosses that actually require multiple players to take down even better.

This. Never had the slightest interest in ESO but a coop skyrim i could play with 1-4 others gives me a nerd boner.

didn't they do this with the baldur's gate games and ended up adding more glitches than features?

This was their plan all along. Let the PC players buy the game, pay for a subscription, and do all of bug testing. And then when the console version is ready make the subscription optional.

It won't stand out amongst the many f2p generic mmos in the market. The genre desperately needs a major quality bump.

I've never heard anyone say they wanted an Elder Scrolls MMO. Everyone I know and everyone on these boards just wanted co-op functionality.

Bethesda could have even made it a pricey DLC and they would have cashed in big time.

Elder Scrolls games have always been about you, the one character, becoming a badass and saving the world. The game just doesn't make sense with 1000 other heroes running around trying to save the world too, in the exact same way you are. Talk about an immersion breaker.

I wouldn't even try ESO if it were free with a shop. After playing tons of games like that, I've come to have the opinion that i just can't stand the affects on gameplay which shops create--bloated grinds seem to be the most common.
