Easiest to build?

The NEC 3540A dvd/cdrw combo drive is about the best in terms of media compatibility. I have the slightly older 3520A, but I've been using NEC drives since the 1100A model and have never had any complaints. They are built solid, very fast, and pretty quiet. The price tag is very pleasing for what it is.

Hi DejaWiz!

And yes, I'm very comfortable with the choices! I think you've been honest and have given me suggestion that you truly feel are good ones. I've been paying attention to the number of views this post has had, and with well over 900 views no one seems to be stepping up to dis-agree with you. So this tells me that there must be a lot of people that feel the same way you do, because I know on forums people will really jump in your face if they feel your giving bad advice or just dis-agree with you. It also tells me theres a lot of people learning from these post and just leaving it up to me to ask all the questions, lol.

You've stuck with me and haven't even one time made me feel stupid or talked down to me. I think you're a caring person that just likes to help others and I thank you so much for being that type of person! And if something goes wrong or I end up with a lemon and things don't work out, you don't have to worry, I understand that and won't feel you didn't know what you were talking about. And besides, I know you'll buy it from me if it doesn't work. lol j/k
Thank you for your kind works, K!

I appreciate it greatly and that you seem very comfortable with the recommendations thus far. ;)

That looks like a nice one! I'm not sure what color case I'm going with yet, I like the looks of black but it seems like it would really show the dust so I may go with the aluminum or silver look, but then I don't know if I can find a silver floppy, Zip drive,DVD and removable hd. But I'll look around and see whats out there. When you use one of those all in one DVD/CDRW drives do you still use an extra CDROM dive? Any point to having both? Thanks!

You can get drives in other colors than beige or black, but it can be tricky to find them. Usually, the drives that do come in silver aren't that great of a brand. :( I usualy spray my case down with canned air once a month to get the dust out of the air intake ports, etc.

There are some cases out there that have door covers to hide the color of the drives, but they are usually very expensive cases (Lian Li).

I have a dvd burner (NEC 3520A) and a Lite On cd/rw + dvd reader combo, cuz i like having two drives so i can leave my game discs in. hehehe

Thanks DejaWiz!

Hey is it worth the extra 70 bucks to go with the X2-4200 over the X2-3800? If it's faster it seems like it would be, no? Thanks!

That's subject to how much you want to spend. They will perform almost exactly alike, as a 200MHz increase isn't really noticable on an A64 platform. You have to have a difference of about 400MHz or more to notice a bit of a difference for single threaded apps/games. Even higher for multithreaded apps/games that can fully utilize the X2 dual core.

OH OK, thanks!

So I'm guessing having twice the cache doesn't mean much either then, hey? Thought I was really onto something too! lol

The 4400+ and 4800+ have the 1MB cache per core. Unless you're doing some really heavy CAD or multimedia work, it won't make a difference at all.

This is why I don't like to think, it just doesn't get me anywhere! lol

I wanted to ask too about the SATA thing, do they hook up like my old drives do? I have two and both on the same cable and controller as master/slave? I also have my DVD and CDRW the same way,can I do that too with the new setup? That will leave me one pci slot left for my Zip drive which I think I had to us a Promise controller card, think that's what it's called anyway. :) Thanks!

No harm done, K!

SATA drives hook up 1 drive per connector on the motherboard, and the cables are thin compared the big and flat IDE cables.

The DVD/CD drive(s) will hook up the same. If you're only going to use 1 optical drive, you should be able to hook up the ZIP with it in master/slave.

The NEC 3540A is on sale with free shipping!

I'm confused again. If the two hd's have to take up both controllers on the mb, then that leaves me only 3 pci slots for my, DVD/CDRW, Zip drive, CDROM and modem. How is that going to work out? Thanks!

Kathy

New motherboards have between 4-8 SATA ports, each of which you can plug a single drive into. They still have the old IDE connectors. Usually 2 ports able to run 2 drives each in master/slave. The PCI slots are totally separate. ;)

4-8 SATA ports = 4-8 SATA hard drives.
2 IDE ports = 4 total IDE devices (hdd's, dvd drives, zip drives)
3 PCI slots = 3 PCI devices (sound card, modem, etc)

...all at the same time. :D

This is good news and music to my ears!!! :D

So are there SATA DVD/CDRW drives or are all the extra SATA connectors just for HD's? Thanks again!

Kathy

There are SATA dvd/cd drives, but they are very pricey and offer nothing in terms of speed or stability over IDE.

The heck with that then! :D

OK, once again you've given me sooo much help and I really do appreciate it! You have a great day! My boss is looking at me like "what am I paying you for" so I better clear off my desk and go home now. :D

Oh well, there used to saying (Houston we have a problem!) lol

Well, you'll be happy to know I ordered all my parts tonight, except the case and I have an empty Cool Master aluminum case that I never used before, so do you think that will work?

I ended up getting the MB, CPU and fan from Monarch Computers. It cost just a little more but they will set it up and test it for me, for free. Only problem is the cpu has an ETA of 8/10/05, sure hope it comes in! The rest of the stuff I got from NewEgg. I'm so excited and I know I won't sleep untill it comes! :D

Here's a list of what I got. See if I did good? :)

1. ASUS MB A8N-SLI Premium
2. AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
3. EVGA 7800GTX
4. Samsung 200GB Hard drives (2)
5. Rosewill 2GB (2X1GB) Memory DDR400 (PC3200)
6. PCP&C 510w Power supply
7. NEC DVD/CDRW Drive
8. Kingwin removable hd trays (2)

Kathy

Way overkill for your uses.

I'll trade u my system, and give you a 100 bucks too ,like the good Samaritan I am
:D

[drool smiley here] Nice setup K! Cooler Master cases are decent. Can you tell us what kind of fans it houses total? Awesome, awesome setup! [/jealousness] :D

Thank you!

The only extra fan (I think) is right on top and it's just a small one. There's none on either side, but I'm not sure if there's one in the back. I'll try to dig it out tomorrow and see. But I'm almost positive that's it. :)

Oh wait, I think there's one in the front too.

If the case has at least fans in the front and back (to go along with the blowhole on top), then you should be fine in terms of airflow. Definitely let us know what the quantity and sizes of those fans are.

good job kathy sounds like a kick-ass system. i hope you continue to tell us how this bad-ass pc is benchmarking. A couple of questions for , are you planning on adding a second 7800gtx, since you have a sli-motherboard? and tell me how that x2-3800 is running your games.

DejaWiz, there are 2 fans in the front on the bottom (one on top of the other) and one on the top of the case and then one in the rear plus the one for the PS. There all small, I'd say about 3 inches across. Is this OK? The Pen4 system I have now which never runs hot only has a fan in the front and rear, none on top or the sides. My brother told me the reason my Dad never used this case was because it was loud. Are there some good quiet fans I could pickup and stick in there before I start building this thing? I really need it to be a quiet computer because of it's location. Thanks!

Thanks alldat, I appreciate the nice comments! And yes, I'll be getting another video card for it down the road and I'll be letting you and the world know how it runs! :D

Sounds like 80mm fans ya got there. Probably don't want to go over 26-30dB, as that's approaching the annoyance threshold for most people (at least me anyway :p )

Cooler Master makes a very nice model that has decent airflow and low noise. And even a model with almost no noise, but sacrificed some airflow. They even have a 6-pack of fans at a great price.

Thermaltake has a multi-rpm fan that can be manually adjusted or thermal controlled. Standard or LED version. Then there is their full thermal controlled model, too.

Any of these will work fairly good for you, depending on what you want (if you don't like any of these, there's tons to browse through at both SVC and Directron websites). But if noise is a really really huge concern for you, then you might want to entertain the idea of getting a case that has 120mm fans.

Actually, I need to correct myself. The Intel board only allows overclocking with the 840 XE. not the normal D. And only the XE has hyperthreading turned on.

The biggest problem I have with AMD systems is the chipsets and motherboard vendors. They always seem to be lesser quality the Intel based boards, and plagued with more problems. I know, that will probably start a flame war... but it's what I've seen, and a quick look at the AMD forum seems to have more "issue" threads. Nvidia and ATI might actually change that.

As Kathy already pointed out, Intel built boards are the most solid and reliable. Asus is a close 2nd IMHO.
in my experience, my NF3-250GB board that I am running my s754 3700+ on is about the MOST stable platform i've ever used, and that includes intel chipsets since the socket7 days....... and the only additional step to setting it up over an intel system is installing the NF3 platform drivers........

EDIT: actually, the reason the Intel built boards SEEM most stable and reliable is that the BIOS has most of the options disabled that could cause problems and instability when tinkered with....... you'll be fine with any other quality board vendor as long as you don't play with settings without understanding what they do...... IMHO....

Thanks for the info.......

Got any comments on the S939 X2 3800+ system that Kathy has just bought the parts for and are in transit right now?

How about the airflow questions regarding her Cooler Master case and keeping it quiet? I listed some fans in a previous post, what are your thoughts?

;)

Kathy said:
Hi Kathy, don't know ya yet so welcome to [H], I was perusing your thread and got in too late to contribute anything, but I wanted to congratulate you on your purchase, WAY more system than you need right now, but at least it will run anything you can throw at it for about the next year or so, and then if it starts feeling slow, you can just pop in another 7800GTX and be good to go...... to give you a point of reference, the system in my sig is a smoking fast rig as far as i'm concerned, and it's like one of those $300 Walmart systems compared to what you're putting together....... you are making the right decision..... :)

not too sure about the case/airflow since i'm not familiar with Cooler Master....... i've never had too much concern about noise either, so i'm afraid I can't offer too much insight on keeping the thing quiet, for this I apologize, my Window AC is right next to the computer and drowns out all of the noise anyways..... I would just suggest finding fans with a good CFM rating and the lowest possible decibel rating, and perhaps using a fan controller for control over the fan speeds.....

As far as the parts Kathy has on the way, as I just posted.... smoking system, should make her happy for quite some time to come, and is expandable for the future, she def. did the right thing..... :D the X2 3800+ should be marginally faster than my 3700+ s754 on single-threaded apps, and totally kill it with multithreaded apps/multitasking.....

Good call. A fan controller might be a viable option, if there is enough free drive bays in the case with the optical drive and removable hard drive trays.

I think a real challenge here is finding 80mm fans that move decent air while staying ninja quiet. That's why I initially recommended a case that sports 120mm fans and then posted some links to 80mm thermal controlled fans. The 120's turn at a fraction of the rpms of an 80, are much more quiet, and still often move more air.

Your call, K!

Thanks DejaWiz! I think I'll order a few of those fans and see how it works. Heck, they don't cost that much anyway and I'd really like it to be as quiet as I can get it. I really appreciate all the info and the links! I feel like I'm taking advantage of you and I really don't mean to. I ask you stuff just to get your opinion and don't expect you to look this stuff up for me. It's so nice of you to help me the way you have and I tell everyone about my computer buddy that's helping me out, lol. Oh and my boss told me if I do a good job on mine he wants to pay me to build two computers for the office. I wouldn't take his money but it might get me a few days off work here and there. :D

coolie_d, thanks for all the kind words, warm welcome and the great advice, I sure do appreciate it! You guys have been so great and I thank you so very much! BTW your the second person now that has made reference to looking at there sigs but I don't see them, is this something that has to be turned on? I thought at one time I had my system in my sig but I don't it anymore either. Thought maybe the forum did away with that feature. Anyway, thanks again and don't be a stranger! :)

Kathy

No need to feel like you're taking advantage of me. I do this for the fun of it! LOL

Please let me know how those fans do, as I'm kinda curious. I've got some extra parts to assemble into a working system and need some good quiet fans as well (if I can ever get my rear in gear to build it).

To enable your sig:
Click on "User CP" in the little red bar across the top of the forum window (scroll up to the top).
On the right side, there will be a list of selections under "Settings & Options"
Click "Edit Signature"
Voila!

Thanks, I found it even if you don't know your right from your left. :D

And I sure will let you know about the fans. That's the least I can do! :)

Well I have to finish watching this move (Godsend) I have a feeling it will end up stupid, but I have to see now. lol
