How is better for overclocking and games :

the Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 3.33GHz 6MB 1333M
or Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHz 12Mb 1333M

? :confused:
 
Just my thought, I've been reading that the dual core is actually more preferable in games where you actually don't even use the full potential of all four cores. Hence, the dual core would be better because it has a faster clock speed on it.

cpu speed or cores matter little at 1920+ in games alone. Price alone on the merit of these two choices leads us to E8600. This is considering no other application other than just games.
 
1920+ is all gpu as long as you have a relatively modern cpu made in the last couple years. Learning anything yet waz?
 
With most games, they become more GPU limited at 1280x1024 and above. Once you're at 1920x1080, the CPU does not matter that much.

So basically a E8600 will perform the same as a E7200 at 1920x1080 and above.

Danny, trying my best to stay clear of the ugly dual vs quad threads. It's like a minefield!
 
Well it depends on what kind of money you have to spend.

Clock for clock, in most games the 2 chips will perform similar.

Both chips can overclock very well 3.8ghz or more.

You will get a benefit from the quad if the game takes advantage of quad core processors.

There are many other things that a quad will help with when it comes to general computing.


Its really up to the money you have to spend. I would go w/ the quad, but depending on what you are going to do with your PC, or how much loot you have to waste you may not.

You already got the Q9550 according to your sig you're set and you're fine
 
since you posted that you're upgrading to i7, i'm assuming you want our reaction. Not worth it.
Not sure why you would spend extra money for new motherboard processor and memory for minor gains, unless you have some other purpose for your old computer.

its just as bad as the 500 threads about what heatsink to use with the i7.. i mean seriously.. does anyone know how to search? its like google never even existed in their minds either..

though there is a single word that comes to mind in my head after reading his response.. ahem*ban*ahem..

if your going to post a question.. ask for legitimate help.. and quit wasting every ones time here.. we have more important questions to answer for people then dumb stuff like this to get an opinion you were never even going to listen to in the first place..
