Got my E8600 in and tested for stability finally.

I've settled on 4.4GHz @ 1.328V CPU-Z. I came from an E8400 at 4.0GHz @ 1.346V CPU-Z.

The jump to 4.5V was getting too hot and was taking over 1.425V to get stable and I stopped there.

I'm using a TRUE with slow, silent, clamshelled 120mms.

So, I'm happy with the E8600 for sure. 400MHz faster with less volts needed.

Will I notice a difference from the E8400? Probably not in gaming, but rendering, yes.

So save the "Why the hell did you pay $xxx more for only 400MHz!?" comments please. :)

Cause this is my hobby and I love speed. :)
 
Just ordered one last night too. running 3.9 at 1.32 load is getting a little irritating. Anyways, great results you have there. From some looking around 4.5 and up requires 1.4+vcore on most e8600s. I did see someone priming at 5.0 with 1.4 though :eek:.
 
Man, the more I read about these chips, the more impressed I get. That's one sweet overclock :D.
 
I know it's not about the results, but still... "rendering?" If I'm interpreting that correctly, surely you're aware that just about any Intel quad core would still be faster.

Ahhh... except that my rendering software doesn't support quad cores unless I upgrade to the $800 version. :)

Ok, forget I said rendering, I just did it to see that 4.42GHz on my post screen. :)

Did you sell the E8400?

Nope, haven't sold it yet. I might put it in my secondary box to replace my E6600... not quite sure what to do there.

I've read on XS that Q822xxxx.... is supposedly the best one to get, but I really am very close to what they are doing. Most of those guys are all on water or better anyway. Nobodys fully convinced on the best batch at this point... My issue is simply cooling holding me back from going further. I refuse to have a loud PC! :)
 
Thanks for the data point. I installed an E8600 Wednesday night and am in the process of finding the highest available overclock.

Its on an ASUS PQ5 Deluxe board under an OCZ Vendetta 2 HSF.

I have been able to get it to POST at 4.7 Ghz at 1.3625 volts but it is not Prime stable over 10 minutes. . . I am working it slowly down in frequencies searching for stability.

The highest temperature that I have seen is 68 degrees Celsius as reported by hardware monitor, cpu temp and cpu-z. A bit high but quite nice considering I am pushing it hard under air.

Not planning on taking it over 1.3625 volts as that is the highest voltage on the Intel spec sheet.

Currently, it is Prime stable for about 2 hours at 4.55 Ghz. It sits at around 62 degrees C while under full load.

Wednesday evening at initial startup, I left the voltage at 1.12 volts and bumped up to 4 Ghz and it ran overnight without a problem.

I would be happy with the 4.4 Ghz that you settled on.

This seems to be the norm for most air cooled E8600's. I like nice round numbers, so I stuck with 440x10. You know when you found a happy place for each unique chip with it's OC, and 4.4 is definitely where my chip likes it - nice n cool. Anything more is unhappy. :)

same exact batch and packdate as mine. 4400 seems like the sweet spot for 24/7 air for me I am happy, all mobo volts set to min value for this. 4500 is achievable i bet with 1.3625vcore in bios, think i may try.
 
Good for you, I have a E8500 and I tried overclocking mine to 4.03 Ghz but it wasn't stable which is a pain in the ass, I better see where I went wrong.

But yes, these latest Intel CPU's are quite fun to configure and overclock.

Is the first vcore I loaded windows in to test, so haven't tried any other vcore settings yet.

Room ambient = ~20C
Powermate Wattage Meter = 142-151 Watts under Prime95 load

Installed Realtemp yesterday and I am MUCH more comfortable with the temps being reported. It seems that core temp readings may be inaccurate.

Realtemp is reporting 31 Celsius at idle and no higher than 56 Celsius under 100% load under air at 4.4 Ghz (440 FSB) and 1.28 volts (as reported by CPUZ).
 
Yes RealTemp 2.70+ is the ONLY accurate temp sensor for any 45nm Intel chips, period.

After my awesome e8400 I'm not absolutely NOT impressed with this chip at all. I know its 3.33ghz stock but to only get 4.5 out of it where with my 8400 that was 3.0 and getting 4.2 out of it.. Its pretty much the same sort of overclock but the 8600 required more voltage across all areas to get it where it is.

Wow you are right! That e8400 SUCKS!!! 70 degrees AND 1.5 Volts!?! lol I'm not impressed with your e8400 either.

You really need to replace that crappy e8400 with an e8600, which is capable 4.5 Ghz, at 1.2 volts and 55 degrees Celsius really shows us what a HUGE improvement the e8600 is over the e8400.

Geez, people are getting 5 Ghz at your e8400 temps and volts on e8600 chips.

4ghz is easy on these e8600..no doubt about that...

but more than 4.4ghz it needs lots of juice..
heat is also a problem..

its a power hog too at 4.55ghz i'm pulling 290w on the wall...running occt..
extreme.outervision computed mine drawing around 150w(heat heat heat)

i got my e8600 at 4.55gh at 1.5v...on water...ran occt for 2hours..and its ok..

Ah, my bad. I meant to say 4.4 Ghz. Mine is two hours stable on OCCT at 1.296 Volts and with both cores at 100% load under air, the cores never exceed 58 Celsius and it takes quite awhile for it to reach that temp.

I did try 4.5 Ghz extensively but was not able to get it to run stably at anything below 1.4 Volts. Never tried to exceed 1.4 Volts.

The point is, either Firebane is being sarcastic about his chip, or one of us is missing something.
 
How much does higher voltage actually damage the chip? I mean if someone runs the E8600 at 5ghz at 1.5-1.6v and it is stable with temps not getting too high, is it okay to run it at that volatage then? Or does it just decrease the life of the chip? Typically people won't be using chips for that long anyway, so does life of the chip really matter that much?

Obviously I am new to O/Cing.
 
I was hoping to make mine stable at 4.5 with less than 1.4v but I haven't been able to yet, it looks like im going to have to leave at 4.3-4.4 range as the 1-200 gHz aren't worth the extra heat
 
i had a q820a from newegg a week or 2 ago and was not particularly impressed. it did 4ghz at default vcore (around 1.06v on my tpower). but no way would it go over 4.4 or 4.5 without at least 1.40 volts (around 0.028v over vid), at which point idle temps were around 48c. so it ran hotter at less voltage over default vcore at the same clock speed (lower fsb) than my e8500. now 4ghz at a whisker over 1 volt is not bad, but the whole 4ghz thing has been done. the way some of these xs guys were typing it was like every one was getting 5ghz with 1.35v vcore. now if you read the thread closely (in xs) you will see that the E0 results are not particularly good. the story gets around that the new stepping is going to be a killer, and everybody jumps on it (me too). never again. all that crap a year ago about b3 or g0 q6600. the average difference was about 100mhz. and maybe a couple degrees.
 
slightly OT, and just to refresh my memory.

e8600 will be the last iteration of Wolfdale before Nehalem takes over...correct?

Meaning this will be the fastest C2D. I'm a little confused, because in the roadmap I'm looking at, there are still e8600s in 2009. will those be just a different stepping or new architecture still being called e8600?

I've been thinking about upgrading to one of these from an Opteron 180. I know I would have get a mobo, ram and cooler as well but my main concern is my PSU. I'll put a link to it below. I understand how to get max amperage but what I'm confused about is that it lists +5V, +3.3V, +12V1, and12V2 all together as having 530w max load...

CoreTemp is correct except it reports tj max as 105 instead of 95. If you subtract 10 degrees or change tj max, they report the same temperatrue
 
so if the E0 E8600 gets 4.4 Ghz @ 1.2v

will an E0 e8400 do 4Ghz @ 1.2v ?

or am i comparing apples to pears here?

let me know.. i'll shut up .. i really don't want to pay the extra price for an extra 400 mhz .. (especially when we're talking about 4ghz vs 4.4ghz)

you're comparing one apple from one tree, to another apple from across the county on another tree. Where ripeness is how far it will overclock. :)

Just depends on the luck of the draw. Your apple might be ripe, it might not be. Even on same batches, same steppings. (same trees) Things vary a lot individually.

That said in general most C0 Wolfdale chips hit 4Ghz though some need a little extra juice to get there. Then some only do 3.9Ghz, some do 4.2+.

E0 Wolfdale chips in general hit 4Ghz easily, and then go about 10% higher on average.

So you have about a 10% higher bell curve distribution from what I've been seeing as results.
 
ok ok... but if we look at the theory behind E0 , an E0 E8400 is supposed to hit 4Ghz on a lowe vid than C0 E8400.

especially after seeing what the E0 E8600 can do.

right?
