My rig in my sig is just not cutting the mustard anymore.I found a awesome deal for a NIB E8400 and a gigabyte d3sl mobo for a outrageous low price
How much of a performance increase will I see in gaming going from a 64x2 5000+ cpu to the E8400 and the gigabyte mobo?

I can play cod4 fine with my current rig but I want to play far cry 2 and I wont even try with my current setup.I am only @1280x768 right now but will be @1680x1050 in january

I am gonna reuse my psu,dvd drive,and hd 4850 with the new build.SO I need a case,os,ram,HD,and heatsink for the new build.

Please guide me on a budget to the parts to get for the new build.I want 4 gigs of ram by the way.Also how long should the new build last me in terms of gaming?

I dont need to max everything out in the settings ingame but I need it to look as good or better then the 360 or ps3 version.Thanks guys
 
Since most E8400s do 4.0Ghz quite easily... and the wolfdales are like 300x faster than your current CPU, definitely go for it....
 
Actually you're playing mostly GPU-limited games. That said, you're not even at 3Ghz on an AMD chip either...so yeah you have PLENTY to gain regardless.

In terms of GPU, I'd jump on a GTX260 whenever you see a MIR at $200 or lower.
 
I can tell it is my cpu holding me back.WHen I had my 8800gt and I played crysis with my rig it was not a good experience.
I looked at a chart for the FC2 performance where they compared cpus and the E8400 was getting 20fps more then my 5000+

So does everyone think this is a good deal and to go for it?
 
Yes. Intel >>>> AMD, IMO. I have never had any troubles with my E8400. Plus if its new you might get an E0 which will mean the overclock will be much better than a C0. Though the C0 overclock is still good. I've gotten mine up to 4.2 prime stable.
 
Is it likely to get a E8400 to be stable at 4ghz on air?
What heat sink fan and ram should I get to get the E8400 to 4ghz stable on air
 
I wouldnt get excited about playing FC2, the user reviews so far say it is appalling.
It doesnt sound remotely like Farcry either.
I "try" some games before I buy but decided to get this without trying it first.
When it arrives Monday it is going back unopened!

To answer the OPs original question, you will get a substantial performance boost from your 4850 with a faster processor.
Windows will also be much snappier.
I am running my E8400 @ 4.1GHz, 1.4V with a TRUE 120 and silent 120mm fan.
It will easily go higher but I dont want to push my luck :)
Dont exceed 1.36V unless you have read up about it and understand the risks.

ps my E8400 is a very early model.
You should be able to get the same overclock with less voltage now.
 
I hope I can get a good OC with just raising the fsb and not the voltage.
What ram do you suggest?Trying to get 4 gigs
 
Would recommend that you get DDR2-1000+ ram for overclocking headroom. The E8400 will go past 400mhz (DDR2800) on the FSB easily.
As for the CPU cooler, i'd say get the TRUE or Tuniq tower if you can manage to fit them in your case.
I'm using the Tuniq and my temps are about 30 degrees idle and 42-45 degrees loaded. This is at 3.8ghz

How and the hell do those coolers fit in a case?They look huge,will they fit in a atx midtower like a CM RC 690 or do you need a full tower to mount those coolers.

The ram is a decent price,not to shabby
 
going from a 4400+ on a nforce 4 board to a e8400 stock on a Gigabyte EP35 board I saw double the performance easily on most things I did :) I dont think you will be a bit sorry going with the e8400

as for overclocking it all depends on the stepping of the one you get. I have two rigs now with e8400 and both will easily do 3.6 but one I had to bump the voltage up (it's an older one) The one I didnt have to bump the voltage up on I am so tempted to take further but it is in my main HTPC right now lol, I'd rather keep the temps down and the fans running slower :D Either way 3.6 is nothign to scoff at for hardly any effort at all, and I am still running 800MHz FSB so my memory is running at what it was rated for, well ok maybe not since I put the timings at 4-4-4-12 instead of 5-5-5-18 lol

BTW I am just using the Arctic cooling Freezer 7 on both my e8400's
 
I want to do it very bad but I need to sell this video card to fund some stuff.
If anyone is interested I have a visiontek hd4850 that is only 1 week old.It has the gfx chilla cooler with the 2 fans installed on it.I have the original stock cooler,the box and all accesories for the hd4850.

I am looking to get a case and a hard drive for the hd4850.I put a thread up in the for sale section but I am not getting any hits on it.Trying to sell for $150 shipped or trade it for some items

I wouldnt say an e8400 can easily do 4.0ghz. Mine was pretty tough to get to 3.8, with 1.328 Vcore. Maybe I could go for 4 ghz within intels rated voltage, but maybe not.

Not a straight up 4.0ghz

Plenty of headroom yet unless your temps are too high already.
1.1328V isnt near hardcore ;)
 
Well still the e8400 @3ghz should stomp my 5000+@2.6ghz into the ground

I did a similar jump and it was tremendous.
 
Fairly easy to reach 3.6 on stock volts with an e8400, mine's at 4.0 with 1.36v, pretty easy OC if you have a Xigmatek or TRUE or the like.
 
I would be very happy with 3.6 that is a full ghz higher than what I have now with my 64x2

That's a cinch maybe even on default voltage. I took my e7200 to 3.6Ghz with an extra tenth. The e8x00's especially E0 steppings seem to have a median average right around 4Ghz on air, provided the HSF is decent and the volts are there

The G.Skill is great ram. Their stuff OC's very well. That's a good mobo too. A decent HSF is the AC Freezer Pro 7. Its super cheap [$27] and a worthy OCer for all but the most [H]. $37 gets you the Xigmatek 1283 which is a terrific cooler. In your case no need to spend more than double that on a Thermalright, which may or may not actually cool the OC'd cpu much better
 
Get the speed memory you intend to run the FSB at (x2).
For example, I am running an E8400 at 4.1GHz with a x9 multi so this gives me a 456MHz FSB so needs ram that will run at 912MHz.
I bought DDR2-1000 for the job.

You can run the memory slower (if not using X38/X48) but there is a performance penalty if you break from running the memory at 1:1 with the FSB.

I only want 4ghz max since it will be cooled with air

So do you think the mobo,cpu,ac pro cooler,and 4 gigs of g skill ddr2 800mhz is a good set up

Yes very decent. As far the the G.Skill 800 actually making 900 you should be good to go. More often than not guys will hit the 450/900 mark with these sticks you may need an extra tenth of a volt which should be fine. Having said that its not a guarantee and spending a bit more 1066 sticks isn't a bad idea either. After rebate some 1066's sticks are just about as cheap as some 800 sticks

That's a myth... sort of. Back in the old days with DDR 1 RAM, it held true. Nowdays, the only place you will see a peformance penalty is in a synthetic benchmark.
 
spend the money you would have spent on fc2 on a nice cooler and rock that 8400~!
