I just got an E8400 in for a customer the other day and was quite dismayed to find it had a 1/2 height cooler and was all aluminum! I understand that with budget chips like the E4500s but I'm getting temps around 67c under full load with these lousy new coolers. What gives with Intel? Can't they afford to at least ship those coolers with the copper slugs still? The lack of metal is not a good thing on these coolers - not when we're paying $210+ for those things!
 
Didn't think that really mattered cause I never see people who actually use the stock cooler.
 
The e8400 runs perfectly well at stock speeds with that cooler. It was not designed for enthusiasts wanting to OC their chips, but for the masses who will never take it over stock speeds. A cheap cooler that does its job means lower cost and lower price, thats just good business practice.
 
Roomate got that cooler with his. Runs great, and not at 67C, he runs in the 40C range AND against my reocmmendations he didn't remove the intel thermal interface to add some of my AC5....

He used the intel thermal stuff that comes attached to the bottom. Worked great, and runs cool, I was impressed.

I think you probably have woefully ineffective chassis cooling AND/OR installed it wrong. The copper slug is unnecessary.

Get another cooler and check against it, these coolers are supposed to suffice for these chips because the chips create so much less heat that it doesnt need a bigger cooler like the E6600 did.
 
I'm going to guess: 1) ambient case temperature is too high or 2) the heatsink isn't mounted properly.

I've used that same heatsink on E2200 systems overclocked to 2.93GHz (~55C load with 26C ambient case temperature), and the E2200 uses more power at 2.93GHz than the E8400 uses @ stock.
 
I'm using the stock cooler, oc'ed to 3.6 ghz, running at 40-45C with Prime95 blend test running according to RealTemp.
 
The E4500s used to ship with a copper cooler but I've had 7 of them in the last 2 weeks and they came with the same lousy cooler. That 67c is with both cores loaded to the max with CPU Burn. It's not woefully inadequate case ventilation at all as a similar setup I've got here does about 52c under the same load with the copper slug cooler. *shrug* Also, to the person who recommended putting Arctic Silver on instead of the stock Intel stuff, that used to be true that AS3-5 were better but the new stuff is ShinEtsu which is generally accepted as a superior thermal compound to most out there... Anyway, these machines aren't going to be OCed as they are for local businesses. I just was wishing that they were a bit more substantial like the original ones were. Oh well.
 
with the stock cooler, my E8400 at stock speeds would hit about 50C under full load
@3.6Ghz would hit about 60C at full load

swapped that for a Scythe Ninja (rev b) my max temp at 3.6Ghz is now about 38C at full load
 
If they included the prescott/core2 style heatsink with it, it would run pretty damn cool. Intel could give that but there's no reason to since a 45nm runs fine with a smaller heatsink. Saves them pennys per unit but hundreds of thousands at the end of the year, and techinically if your using the chip like your supposed to, you won't know the difference.
 
Are the temps everyone is reporting from RealTemp, or CoreTemp, or what...? What is the best program to get temps for the E8400?
 
I surprised at how low the artic freezer 7 keeps my CPU. The CPU fan is not even running at max half speed under load and I only max out temps of 36c. Most of the time the fan doesn't even run at idle and I"m low 20c.

Good point. Those temps were with CoreTemp. I just found out about RealTemp. Next time I get one of those 8400s in again I'll have to see if there's much of a difference. Thanks for pointing that out.
 
here are my temps. all the programs read about the same.

Real temp is running twice once with calibration at 0 an once at ++
