e8400 OC problem

I use a very simple OC: 3.6ghz, I bump the FSB to 400, PCI express manually set to 100% and the DRAM multiplier set at 2.0. I have used that since I built this computer; however, it has reset itself back to 3.00ghz. Whenever I try to restore my OC the system doesn't boot into the desktop. It posts but then it resets immediately after that. I loaded all fail-safe and optimized defaults and tried the OC but no luck. Could this be a hardware problem and not so much something I'm doing wrong?
 
Well, I am not 100% sure but my CPU will no longer do 3.2GHz reliably. I have had to set it down a bit to 3.0GHz to get it to work without crashing randomly. Could be a case of degradation but keep trying I guess, might be something else.
 
I found the solution to a similar problem that kept happening.
Every so often my PC would crash when playing Guitar Hero and subsequent reboots had real trouble hanging onto my CPU overclock.

I remembered reading about other peoples strange experience with USB devices limiting their overclock somehow so tried unplugging the Guitar Hero guitar.
Straight away my overclock took and is rock stable.

Worth checking if you have any rogue USB devices plugged in.

Interesting. I've been experiencing some weird lockups on my computer and that's with everything at stock. :O

Though I don't normally run a lot of USB devices, just keyboard, mouse, and maybe my USB stick.
 
I have 5 USB ports taken: mouse, keyboard, iPod connection, printer & external hard drive. I'll give it a shot.
 
I just found my new Corsair 16GB USB pen does the same thing, I cant overclock and boot with it plugged in, it reboots during POST and resets the overclock back to stock.
Plugging the USB pen in while overclocked seems to work ok but I havent tried gaming with it plugged in yet.
Not all USB devices do this, I wonder what triggers it.

Yup i have this with my WD300GB pocket drive, I cannot have it plugged in whilst I boot otherwise the system reboots whilst posting.

I'm running an X38 mobo using the ICH9 Family Host USB Universal/Enhanced host controller.

Can you list what USB controller chip you have?
(Check Device Manager to see what you have)
 
I'll have to give this a shot as well. I have a bunch of USB devices connected. I'll post back with my results (see if I can get back to 3.2GHz).
 
Likewise, I'll try to reboot with none plugged in then plug in one at a time. Thanks for the lead, will revert.
 
Well I unplugged my printer and my External HDD and it seems like, for now, my 3.2GHz oc is stable again.

had the same problem when i first got my board...besides resetting cmos, look for a legacy usb setting in the bios and disable it. also i noticed this board has horrible vdroop.
 
running a e8500 at 3.41Ghz here no problems with USB devices, however I never plug in my USB or IEEE 1394 drives until I am ready to use them.
