E8400 lost a core?

Ok guys I have a weird situation. I have an E8400 overclocked to 3500 or so. I just overclocked it yesterday and since I was overclocking I downloaded some utilities to monitor it and to stress it to make sure it was stable. When I opened CPU-Z I noticed it only showed one core. Weird, so I DL'ed a few more programs to monitor the chip and they all show one core. I have a Mobo with an nvidia 750 chipset, and the drivers are up to date, the BIOS has been flashed to the most recent one. When I boot the bios recognizes both cores, but once Im in windows, one gets lost. Any suggestions?
 
Yes it is the latest version. Ive tried CPU-Z, Hardware monitor, and another one or two and all show the single core. Im not sure if its a mobo issue, or if I really fried a core sometime and didnt notice.
 
I show 2 in device manager, NOW, but man, I swear to you, before I put the side cover on it just now, only one showed.....gonna run and test CPU-Z again......to be continued








Just looked, only one core still shows under CPU-Z and CPU-ID
 
Ok, I did that and all it says is "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC" , and that was found under the Computer tab in device manager.

I am running 32 bit Xp Pro, Sp3

Your PC has the wrong HAL installed.

Well, IDK what happened but now under device manager I get 2 options for computer, and no tab for processor anymore, so I guess Ill be researching, thanks guys for the input.
 
Ok, got both processors showing again in my Device Manager, and looking for a way to change the HAL
 
The steps are:

*

In Control Panel, click System, choose the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button.
*

Select the Computer node and expand it.
*

Double-click the object listed there (on my system, it is called Standard PC), then choose the Driver tab. Click the Update Driver button.
*

On the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard, click the Next button, then select Display a known list of drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver. Click the Next button.
*

On the Select Device Driver page, select Show all hardware of this device class.
*

Select the HAL that matches your new configuration, multiprocessor or uniprocessor. Click the Next button. Check that the wizard is showing the configuration you want, then click the Next button to complete the wizard.






The problem I am having is when I go thru , I cant get to "Display a known list of drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver. Click the Next button.". I dont get to specify a driver.
 
return it to stock speeds and check. thats the first thing u should do.
 
Ok, back at stock and nothings changed. I guess from what I have read that basically when you install Xp on the machine it decides what one to use and in Xp you cant just go in and change it (???) So I guess Ill leave it be for now.
 
You'll have to reinstall windows.

When installing (where it says press F6 for loading raid drivers) press F5 instead, this will bring you to a secret screen that allows you to pick what PC you want this to be.

The thing is that it appears you only have two options (i486 PC and Standard PC or something), you have to press the up arrow all the way to the top to ACPI Multiprocessor PC).

If you do need to install raid drivers, you'll need to slip stream them onto the disk before hand. (Google up nLite)

I've had this problem in the past with other machines and I hope it works for you. Not a fan of reinstalling either :D But it's worth it if you can get a core back.

Once I completely reinstalled windows, updated windows, installed all my programs, drivers, copied over my files and changed all my settings and guess what? 1 Core. Solution from reading all over the net? Reinstall. /facepalm. Yes, I wasn't happy that day :mad:
