E8400 F@H?

I have 2x E6600's currently OC'ed to a mere 2.8 GHz 24/7. I get about 12 to 13 mins to complete 5000 steps (or whatever the time thing is) I was wondering at a stock clock of 3.0 GHz would the E8400 be much better? (both time wise and heat wise) I don't like to run too high an OC' because these boxen are dedicated, 24/7 folders.
I have another E6420 in a G33 board and I was wondering if it might be smart to keep the 66's folding and just swap out the E6420 for a E8400?
The E6420 is only OC'ed to 2.4 GHz and folds 24/7.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Because I'm a little bit mathematically challenged I didn't post the ppd thing in. With FahMon 2.3.1 one E6600 is 2019.44 ppd and the other E6600 is 2022.13, my trusty ole' E6420 is down ATM. (the E6600's are only OC'ed to 2.8 GHz)
Do these ppd #'s seem OK?
Could I get almost 3500 pernts with a Q6600 (G0, low OC') or should I just hang onto my limited resources until the Q9xxx's surface?
There is no way I could afford the present quad that's already in the market. (I could sell all my worldly possessions, plus the cat, and still be short)
Like I said above any and all opinions, thoughts or advice would be highly appreciated.

You'd be better going Dual core -> Quad core rather than Dual core -> Dual core.

With a fast dual core E8400 @ 3Ghz you'd be looking at ~2,000 PpD
With a Q6600 @2.65Ghz running two Linux VM's with a bit of luck you'd be looking at ~3,200 PpD.
Because I run 2x Linux VM's on my Quads, I treat them as Dual-Dual cpu's.
So a 2.65 Ghz Quad = 5.2 Ghz Dual.
Hence the points gain if you can run a Quad core cpu.

The quad would be your best bet, especially for a pure folding machine. Also, the Q6600 isn't that much more expensive than the E8400.

Too many people payed 200-500 for P4 when they came out, now we can't even run SMP on most. Now you can get them on e-bay for under $50 in some cases.

My F@H servers are based on the P965 and supports Quads on the 1066 FSB. With so many users switching to the 1333FSB now, and tons later in the year, seems like waiting 1/2 a year and saving at least $100.00 a cpu make sense.

At least from my point of view. Others might not share it?

It all depends on the situation. In some cases you are correct, but you also have to run twice the hardware which means more power. The initial purchase isn't the only thing some people have to factor in. I don't really care about power usage that much since I have pretty cheap power. I'm still running a couple of P3s as well as an XP1700+ along with my X2 and C2D. I'm also looking to build a quad core in the next couple of weeks to add to my little garden.

I'll be able to find space by rearranging some things, but it's getting to be a tight fit as it is. Eventually, some computers will be moved into other rooms which requires me to go with wireless cards and that's something I don't care for all that much.

Also, in the case of the OP, he's talking about replacing an E6420 with an E8400. The E8400 on newegg I think is around $220 (going from memory here). The Q6600 is about $278. For $58 more he will probably get close to twice the performance out of the machine.

I wouldn't look for the Q6600 to drop in price any time soon either. Processors like the old E6300 and E6400 did not drop in price after the E6x20 versions came out. Well, this is the case if you are buying new. It doesn't really make any sense to pick up the E6x00 versions of the processors since the E6x20 versions are a better deal in price and performance, however the prices on the older models did not drop. If Intel follows the same route with the quad core, the price on the Q6600 will not drop much either.

I'm not trying to point out that anything you have done is wrong. Hell, I built an X2 4000+ machine not that long ago and the X2s get raped by Core2 in folding performance. I did that just because the price was too good to pass up. I got the main components for the X2 machine for about $200 which was $70 cheaper than a quad core processor. I was just pointing out the differences in some people's needs.

Totally agree with everything in your post. Space is a primary concern for me as well. Not so much that I lack the space, but I despise clutter. The more boxes one has the more cables there are and more wall sockets are utilized. Other considerations are noise levels and power consumption. More boxes = more of both.

I also have 6 boxes running currently and might add one more if I can resurrect my second dual Barton system (which is proving exceedingly difficult in finding an affordable motherboard replacement). I'm loathe to increase it beyond that. For the future, I'm considering custom multi-motherboard chassis solutions that won't take additional space but will provide additional room for multiple systems.

I guess my main point was that technology moves so fast, sometimes it is hard to spend top dollar for something that is outdated in under 6 months.

I do think the Q6600 will drop and here is why.

Up until now, we have been running on the 1066 fsb. Now , the 1333 fsb is coming into play plus the new 45nm process. While it will take more time, more will move to this , wanting to sell what they have to help make up the costs.

It has happened each time a new cpu line has come out.
 
I'm not so sure about the q6600 getting cheaper.

The e6420 is $15 more than it was 8 months ago. The e6600 hasn't changed in 8 months. And the new e8400 is $55 cheaper than the e6850.....basically the same cpu except the e8400 is 45nm. And let's face it.....$276 isn't that much for a cpu that holds ~14ghz of folding power in one shiny little square. :p

If i didn't love my quadgt mobo so much i would dump it for one that will support the new quads. As is I will have to ditch my e6420 for a q6600 in the near future and do a new build for the next gen quads.
 
hmm... there's no difference between 1066fsb and 1333fsb when you're overclocking the chip anyways, you've all probably been running core 2 duos faster then "1333 fsb" for some time ... mine's been running at 400 fsb x4=1600fsb.

if you're gonna fold, it doesn't make sense to get a dual core over a quad core.. you can look at price per point, but that goes out the window in the long run when it costs you more in electricity costs per point when using a system that is only dual core as the video card and other components in the system all use power too.
