e6850 opinions please

i have the e6600. what do you guys think about the e6850? i am thinking about buying it end of this month and a new fsb 1333 intel motherboard.
 
people on this forum is so rich =/ i been using a 3500+ for like 2 years and went through a lot of thinking about upgrading to a quad right now. and here you are, with like a processor thats a few month old and upgrading again
 
Upgrade if ~500$ for a new cpu/mb is worth a 10-15% performance improvement. It definitely isn't a good value upgrade, but if you have the money... what the hell.
 
Not worth it.

The E6750 is more reasonable. I ended up paying about $50 more for selling my E6600 and upgrading to the E6750
 
I don't think you'll see much of a difference. Also, are you already OC-ing the 6600? I'd bet you get less of an OC with the 6850 with its higher default fsb.

When my E6850 hits 3.8-4ghz on air. hoping anyways. Then we will see.

But why get a quad. have it around 3.2ghz when I mostly just game?

Honestly, Im not looking forward to crysis, looks like shit IMO. And yes.. I do play CS. Graphics arent the best, but overall best FPS game Ive ever played. even with the shiet graphics.

Im actually waiting for SC2. I may go out and by C&C3 since I began gaming on C&C red alert back when it was DOS LOL

It all depends really what you use your computer for ya know??

My next upgrade will be Penryn. 12mb cache is just around the corner. Why upgrade to Quad?? this is just IMO remember.. everyone is different

Unless you're heavy into media editing, I agree 100%. A dual core does just fine for now, and costs 1/2 the price (or less) of a quad. Get a dual core, OC the crap out of it.

If I already had a E6600, I don't think I'd get a e6850. I don't think you will see that much of a difference to make it worth it. I'd wait until the next new Intel chips.

How long after its release for it to get to $300? Six months? Maybe about a year before it is affordable?
 
I don't understand people upgrading from E6320/6420/6600 processors.

E6850 = E6600 at 333FSB
E6750 = E6420 at 333FSB
E6550 = E6320 at 333FSB

Intel is actually gaining from this, because now they are charging higher, and making extra just for raising the FSB. Intel could have just released a G0 E6320/6420/6600 but then they couldn't raise the price like the are right now. Intel is being very smart with this.

My Gigabyte DS3 can't cold boot above 3.4GHz - for example I have to boot at 400x8 and change it to 400x9 to get 3.6GHz running. So I'd need a new motherboard to even make use of a E6850, which just isn't worth it to me.

But for those that do upgrade from 266FSB to 333FSB - more power to you. :D
 
Well all all the new 6x50 have a new stepping that runs cooler and uses less power. This should make overclocking noticeably higher.
 
Wow, alot of speculating and no facts in this thread. nice. To the OP, I had an e6600 that would only hit 3.4 ghz and load at around 50C. I swapped it out for an E6850 and am running at 3876Mhz loading at 48C. If I go to 3.9 or 4 ghz it'll run at acceptable temps for a while, but BSOD after a few hours, I think it might be the 680i, not the CPU. I'm still messing around with it, but try that on your B3 stepping e6600 on AIR. You won't even come close. I'm in the same boat, I game mostly, and don't want to give up the single threaded performance. When the 12MB 45nm quads come out, I'll get one of those and OC the shit out of it. It'll put out way less heat than the 65nm quads do now, so my single threaded perf should be the same, I'll just have more cores. I say go for it, man, fuck the naysayers who have no clue what they're talking about.
 
Well, I've got the E6700 and I'm going to an E6850. I want the fastest and I don't really see the need for Quad at this point. I don't do video editing, even though I do need to do a ton of transfers from tape to DVD. Anyway, my 2 cents.
 
Got mine today from Mwave. They were very fast and you can't beat $10 for 2 Day Fedex. I got for $271 plus shipping. Now it's up to $295 I think. Haven't installed yet, but now have to sell E6700 at quite a loss, but WFC. :D

On the e6850 you went from 3.0 stock to 3.876 OC--0.876GHz over stock, 29.2% OC. You get less of a relative performance increase on the e6850, and you only gain an absolute 14% (0.476/3.4) over the OC-ed e6600, both of which were stated in this thread. Or did you disagree with something else that's been posted here?

Nope, I'm disagreeing with all the "10-15% is not worth it" and "I wouldn't do it" type posts, I have done what the OP is asking about and I'm very happy with the results. Like I said earlier, I believe it's my board holding me back, not the CPU....and reaching 3.8-4.0 ghz on a high end air cooler is reaching the thermal wall that it can run at, if I had a WC setup, I'm sure I could reach over 4.1-4.2 like most of the guys at xtremesystems.org. I'm not really sure what you're getting at with the percentages of overclock, I'm looking at the price, the e6850 is cheap as hell, same as the e6600, sure it's not the same ratio of overclock, but it's the thermal properties and how much heat I can bleed off that's stopping me. I'm still extremely happy with my purchase and for $266 you can't beat a 4ghz dual core. If you have the spare change and want a high overclock for single and dual threaded performance, the e6850 is the choice. I'm pretty happy with the extra 500mhz (nearly) on each core :-D
