My next upgrade will be Penryn. 12mb cache is just around the corner. Why upgrade to Quad?? this is just IMO remember.. everyone is different
i have the e6600. what do you guys think about the e6850? i am thinking about buying it end of this month and a new fsb 1333 intel motherboard.
Unless you're heavy into media editing, I agree 100%. A dual core does just fine for now, and costs 1/2 the price (or less) of a quad. Get a dual core, OC the crap out of it.
Quad is only good for multi tasking, editiing, photochop, ecoding. But for gamers. like myself. NO. lol
Regardless i dont see why people are buying a quad now, when Penryn is coming out less thena year.. =/

I don't understand people upgrading from E6320/6420/6600 processors.
Wow, alot of speculating and no facts in this thread. nice. To the OP, I had an e6600 that would only hit 3.4 ghz and load at around 50C. I swapped it out for an E6850 and am running at 3876Mhz loading at 48C. If I go to 3.9 or 4 ghz it'll run at acceptable temps for a while, but BSOD after a few hours, I think it might be the 680i, not the CPU. I'm still messing around with it, but try that on your B3 stepping e6600 on AIR. You won't even come close. I'm in the same boat, I game mostly, and don't want to give up the single threaded performance. When the 12MB 45nm quads come out, I'll get one of those and OC the shit out of it. It'll put out way less heat than the 65nm quads do now, so my single threaded perf should be the same, I'll just have more cores. I say go for it, man, fuck the naysayers who have no clue what they're talking about.
So what exactly has been said in this thread that isn't true? You went from 2.4 stock to "only" 3.4 OC (LOL) on the e6600--1GHz over stock, 41.7% OC. On the e6850 you went from 3.0 stock to 3.876 OC--0.876GHz over stock, 29.2% OC. You get less of a relative performance increase on the e6850, and you only gain an absolute 14% (0.476/3.4) over the OC-ed e6600, both of which were stated in this thread. Or did you disagree with something else that's been posted here?
