A few years ago a friend built a new desktop for me with the following spec

Intel C2D E6600
ABIT IN9 32X Max
4GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 210
1xWD 140GB
4xSeagate Barracuda 750GB (3TB total)
Enermax PSU (750W i think but not 100% certain)
2xDell 2407

I mainly use this for gaming/media but recently i have started moving into vmware and would like to be able to run vmware workstation 9 and must be able to run 2-3 VM.

Recently try to play some of the latest games such as BF3, CIV5 and GW2 on max settings but the FPS and the quality was a disappointment.

I am looking at a complete rebuild (re-using as much hardware as possible), i take it i will definitely need a new MB if i want to go with an I7?

Budget wise...i'm not sure, same prices as iPhone5 in the UK
Cheers

p.s. aim play BF3 at max settings

You're definitely gonna need new CPU, mobo, and RAM. Also find out what PSU you actually have as not all Enermax PSUs are good, especially some of the older ones. Actually you're gonna need a new GPU as well considering that the GeForce 210 is pretty damn slow even a few years ago.

Now as for what CPU to get, a few questions:
1) Are you doing anything else with this PC besides VMs and games? like massive amounts of video editing/rendering for example?
2) Will you be overclocking?
3) What is the price of the iPhone 5 in the UK? Not all of us live in the U.K you know ;)
4) What case do you have?
