I am just getting my new computer set up. the freaking cup fan is driving me nuts. it has a high pitched whine coming from the fan. all 4 legs are snapped down. when I touch the motor of this little fan it either gets real quiet or much louder.

it is time to return it to Newegg?? :(

sounds like it does not have sufficient lube from the factory, it will fail soon.

tough call, send it back and be without new machine for weeks or just order a better heatsink, If you got the cash I would go with another heatsink, I have seen the stock intel ones sold pretty cheap new,

yea here is stock replacement for $10 plus flat rate shipping in case you see some other goodies you want. I have delt with these guys, they are ok, never a problem.

Here is a place with good prices on the latest fancy ones. I have not bought from these guys but have heard of them for a long time and prices are good.

it is the principal of the matter. I paid $315 for this CPU/fan. I am sending it back  we still have our old computer for the basics. plus I have to work this weekend, so no real loss there. I do want to buy a 2nd case fan though. the case is a bit too warm. after I get my new cpu/fan I may replace the stock fan anyway

I just wanted to vent and curious if anyone else had the same problem. extremely annoying sound.

Might be just a guess... but couple of times my pci-e cards were making SO much noise, that I couldn't stand it(especially in vista...), they sounded as 100 God damn airfields sitting on my desk... but after I installed proper drivers, the noise was reduced by well over 50% and they became much quiter. I know cpus are different from gpus, but still...
Im really not up2date with latest pc hardware, but did you install all the drivers etc..
My 2nd guess is that your fan is f*ckedup, as someone mentioned earlier...

I don't know how much more the retail version of the E6600 is over the OEM version in the US but here in Denmark the difference in price of the two are less than a Dollar, there's how much value that cooler holds.

Hell, Intel seems to be doing what they can to keep the aftermarket cooling industry alive and kicking. ;)
