I ordered the mobo first, and immediately installed a new NB heatsink and the brackets for the Thermalright XP-120 heatsink. To my demise, this setup never booted. When I hit the power button, *something* happens--I think I can hear the PSU start up very briefly--but no life.

The PSU should be good, since I was just using it on my s478 system a week or two ago.
This is my first s775 system, so it was a little wierd putting it together...I'm just checking to see if there are any "well, duh" details that I'm missing? Either that or I guess I need to take it to CompUSA so they can determine which part is bad.

eliminate your issues 1 by one. check your power button connections to the boad. or try jumpstarting the system manually with a screwdriver or something.. If that doesn't work try booting up with a different PSU (make sure the voltage on your PSU is correct). At this point if nothing else has yielded good results then it's probably the board or the chip. I would say if you have an extra 775 swap it out and see, but if the board is bad and it kills the CPU that wouldn't be good.

yeah....like I said this is my first 775 so that's why my troubleshooting options are limited. The next-best PSU I have is an old Antec 350w....so I can't even verify my Neo500 PSU works!

The board and PSU are already sitting on my desk out of the case, and I did try jump starting.

If the board is bad, and it took my CPU with it, I'm gonna cry. Hopefully whatever the problem is, I can RMA the affected parts. That may be difficult with my mobo since I already swapped the nb heatsink and put the xp-120 adaptor brackets on it.

If there aren't any little "tricks" I'm missing, it looks like I'm taking it to CompUSA to have them diagnose...and charge me like $100/hr to do it!! :( I miss having pins on the CPU...at least then I could make sure the CPU was perfectly in place before clamping down on it with the retention bar.

the other PSU will be fine for your purposes. you're not going to need 500w of power just to bootstrap the hardware. Go over the CPU in the socket, take it out and put it back it and make sure it's in correctly. I've also heard of some mobos booting without a CPU just for an instant, so you could always try that too, just to see what happens.

Could be ram boot problem. The DS3 boots ram with 1.8v and many that require higher voltage do not boot up. I haven't seen anyone else run this board with PQI memory so I don't know if it works or not. May need a cheap stick of low voltage to try and boot with then up the voltage and switch it out.

Oh yeah I have heard about that that....I was always confused by it though....

My PQI is rated for 2.0v @ 667

It seems like it should be able to boot at 533 @ 1.8v doesn't it?

Regardless, I will probably swing by Best Buy toinght to pick up their cheapest DDR2 stick they have. Thx for the tip Daleon.

The 350w psu isn't even 24 pin....will a 24 pin board boot with a 20 pin PSU in it?

Yes, it should. When I built my conroe build the I just took the PSU I had with the 20 pin and it worked fine for general computing purposes. But then I tried to fire up a game with heavy 3d and not enough power got to my Graphics card and fried the 3d Rendering on it.

My bud Runs that RAM at 2.1v to keep it stable with a small overclock. If you get some RAM just for troubleshooting, I got some cheap 533 that only needs 1.8v. I'd almost bet it's the RAM. This is why I was telling the other guys 667@1.8v is the best. I'm one of the GSkill ZX victims and they replace it with 667 PK rebadged as 800 and still will not run properly at 800MHz.

NEO's are the only Antec PSUs I don't like. My Asus A8N-SLI wasn't the only system it didn't power correctly. I still think the Antec TP 550W 2.0 is under rated.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that the initial start up. It seems to start, then stops for about 2 to 4 secs and then starts up completely. So don't panic there.
