E6400 over E6600?

I'll be honest: I'm on a tight budget. I know the E6600 is the Conroe to have, but I can't afford $316, let along the $350 etailers are asking.

I saw how the E6300 overclocked, and was sold. Then I got to thinking about the E6400. It's the same as an E6300, with an 8x multi, right? So it should overclock better than the E6300, right?

I'm encoding and gaming, but mostly encoding. I'm not buying my mobo until there's a decent one out at a reasonable price, but I'm wondering if I should preorder my CPU since Tankguys is promising them this week.

Should I pay extra for the E6400, or go with the E6300?

Or wait until Christmas?

No! Just think times or X 266.7. If the E6700 has a 10 multiplier, just count back. THat would mean 9 for E6600, 8 for 6400 and 7 for 6300.
 
I'm going with the 6400. One thing you have to think about is you will need a REALLY good board to get a lot out of the 6300. Depending on how much you want to OC, I think the gigabyte DS3 with the 6400 or 6300 is the best choice. The DS3 is getting really high FSB in early tests, no walls like the Asus MB.
 
I actually switched FROM an E6600 pre-order TO an E6400 pre-order because I felt the extra performance wasn't worth the price gap. It does have an 8x multiplier (the E6400). They're supposed to be great overclockers, too :D... I'm pairing mine (pre-ordered from Tankguys) with an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe from Tankguys (already received). I think the difference between the E6300---->E6400 is definitely worth it, but unless you have money to spare or already have SLI 7900GTX's/equivalent, you should put the cash into savings or even use it toward better video cards :D!

Must been reading my mind, I'm looking at doing the same. So far, the Plain Jane Asus board P5B has my eye. Someone has to have cheaper than Newegg's $169 LOL!

Haha, yeah... the only reason I bought a more expensive motherboard is because I need the system up ASAP, and also know that the board I got will support Kentsfield. It also included a wireless-G card that I needed anyway, so that brought the effective cost down for me :D!

4M cache makes about a 5-10% difference at best, less in some apps from further tests I have seen.

Yup, I would have went with it but I'm doing a complete computer, not just mobo, proc and ram as I had planned at first. I still might get another Video card. I'm planning on keeping my AMD system in tact and demote it to the wife's and save her's for our daughter.

You have to be talking about the P5B DH:) If I were doing just mobo, proc and RAM, it's the one I'd get as well.
 
The E6600 , straight out of the box , without any overclocking its as good or better than the FX-62 , that to me says it all .

Overclcoking it is just more for your money , i plan to overclock mine to at least 3.7ghz and will be very happy at 4ghz and wouldnt bother after that.

But i reckon getting to 3.5ghz is going to be easy.Even that speed is brill , that will give 50% than the FX-62 and that half cant be bad.
