I read the guide but still have some questions. Im able to run at 280 mhz, but when i try around 300, it boots but shuts down after several minutes. i find this weird b/c i set the ram less than 800, which is what its rated for. the timings are 4-4-4-12. any advice?

p5b deluxe/wifi
kingwin 12025
its at 32 at idle at 2.24
2 gb ocz plat rev 2 ram

i know that a lot of people are asking for similar stuff, but i have listened and tried. can anyone please help

Loosen the timings to 5-5-5-15.

Wait, is that "2.24' the CPU voltage or the RAM voltage? What voltage do you have on the E6400?

I agree, loosen the RAM timings and set the VCORE to auto so that it gets what juice it needs. I have the same mobo and CPU and I'm able to hit 3.2Ghz on my system (been running that speed for about 18 months now). You may also try setting the FSB to 401Mhz. I couldn't boot anything between 350 and that, but bumping to 401Mhz solved the problem. Good luck! :D

alright thanks, ill try doing 5-5-5-15 on ram on auto voltage? or set it to 2.2?
and ill do auto vcore at 300 just at first. will see if it works then bump it to 401.

btw i have 0507 bios, i know that newer versions are better but i havent figured out how to update it without resetting my whole pc. is there a safe way without losing everything?

Not sure I understand your question about flashing the BIOS. All you need to do is set it to defaults, flash the BIOS to the new version, then when it restarts go back into the BIOS and set everything the way you want. If I'm not mistaken, 0507 is the revision I have, so it should work fine for you (though I'm not sure if there may be better versions available). I know if you flash the BIOS, you want to avoid the GUI flash utility that works from within windows. Not sure if they've fixed it yet or not, but there was a major problem with their winflash program and it was ruining mobos. Best to stick with other methods.

Your RAM I would set at auto at first, then you can bring it down to the lowest setting possible while staying stable.

ok i set it to 300, it was only stable for about 10 minutes. the temps were fine--around 35 degrees.
now im at 299.
something is definitely wrong.
bios settings:
C1E-disabled
max cpu ID-enabled
vanderpool-disabled
cpu Tm -enabled
exe...-enable
peci-enable
speed step-disable
these are from the guide on this site.

You could also just have a bum chip. Just because most OC to great speeds, doesn't mean all chips will.

Set the CPU voltage manually to 1.35V. The auto VCore may not be scaling the voltage high enough. Set the RAM at 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V.

i did what you said. i have it at 295 mhz, but orthos wasnt even able to go past one minute, same with prime 95.
can the chip be this bad?

Hmmm. up the voltage all the way to 1.5V. Then try again. Just to make sure, your RAM speed is at 590Mhz right? In keeping with a 1:1 ratio for RAM and FSB?

ram is at 370. 4:5 ratio.
ill try upping to 1.5 and making 1:1 and setting fsb to 400. i know that 350ish is a bad spot.

Make sure it's 401Mhz, not 400Mhz. You have to get past the 350 - 400 hole before the P5B Deluxe will work properly while overclocking.

it seemed to work at 400. although it wasn't stable for very long, only several minutes. ill do 401 when i get home and get voltages to something stable, from auto.
