When I booted up my system for the first time I heard clicking noises. I looked inside the case and noticed the CPU fan wasn't spinning. I promptly turned off the computer and turned it on again soon after to have a closer look. This time I didn't hear any out of place noises, but I observed that the CPU fan made a small rotation the moment I turned the computer on. I didn't leave it on for longer than 10 seconds and didn't try turning it on again as I don't want to fry the CPU. There was no warning about the fan displayed on the screen (just the white boot screen followed by DOS).

The fan is plugged into the motherboard, there is nothing blocking the blades.

The system consists of the following items (all straight out of the retail box):
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor

Antec Neo HE 550w Power Supply

What are the possible causes of this and how can I track the problem down?

Thanks in advance.

I should search BEFORE posting next time. :p

I sure would they would fix the BIOS to at least make the fan always spin so a) it would not be so startling and b) it would not trigger the "fan has failed alarm" in the BIOS. I choose to keep the alarm set to ON in the BIOS but I ignore any beeps that happen during POST now that I know what is the cause of it.

As an aside, I noticed your build is very similar practically the same as mine check my signature :D [ I got my case & P/S at Fry's too, but I pciked the Ultra Wizard case and V-series 500W supply that were both free after rebate.] My DS3 fan acts the same too, it is driven by temp. on the auto setting.

The fan may actually be faulty. also gigabyte mobos allow you to update the bios in the bios screen (f8 i think). anyway another way to check is to go into bios and go to pc health and see details about the fan. turn smart controll off and reboot otherwise simply plug another 80mm fan into the cpu fan header holding it in your hand turn your pc on. you wont fry c2d, worst case scenario the system simply stops from heat. but a 3 second check wont hurt. you could alternately plug the cpu fan into the mobo fan header or get a bypass plug and plug that fan straight into the psu molex plug..

I would just cut the 3pin off of the fan and then wire it to the 4pin molex but thats me and I don't have expensive hardware like you guys.

Umm... guys this is a feature not a fault, its called "smart fan control". As party stated feel free to turn it off in the bios or leave it running if you want a quieter system.

It should start spinning within 30 seconds if you are booting into an O/S. You can go a few minutes before heat will become a problem so test it.

QFT

exactly right, the cpu is so cool at first boot the thermal control system sees no need to spin the fan. It should start up in less than a minute tho. Also if you have the "detect cpu fan fail" enabled in the bios it will produce a constant beep until the fan starts spinning.
