E4300 Stablity Test

Okay, so right now I have my Intel E4300 clocked at 2.8 GHz (311 x 9) on stock air-cooling on a ASUS P5B-Deluxe and 2x1024MB DDR2-667 Kingston, and just earlier today, my computer suddenly restarted Windows shortly after Windows started up the first time, without an error message, power-failure, or BIOS warning. So I was just wondering is this because of my CPU clock? Should I tone it down? It is totally stable and potentially unsafe? The temps seem to be fine... 31 degrees celsius min. and 53 degrees celsius max. after I run CPU Burn-in V1.101 for 15 minutes. Is there also any software I can run to stress my CPU to test it's stability? Thanks!
 
Download Orthos or OCCT and run some stress tests, I'd be willing to bet it's an unstable overclock, you may need to up the vcore. Keep a close eye on temps if you go that route though.
 
After two minutes of the 'blend' test on Orthos, I reached 68 degree's celsius and ASUS Probe gave me a 'temperature warning.' However I let it run for 3 more minutes and it didn't go any higher. Is this clock too high? Should I make sure some features are enabled/disabled in my BIOS? Thanks!

PS: This is the first time this has happened in the last 4 months I've had it OC'd.
 
Sounds like you've reached the max with the stock cooler, time to consider an aftermarket cooler or drop the overclock down slightly. As we hit the warmer temps of the summer months inadequate cooling becomes apparent. Try setting it at 2.5ghz and run Orthos for a few hours, then check the temps. I have an E4300 running 3.25ghz, but it's watercooled and doesn't break 60C under load, even after being at 100% load for over a week!
 
Well, I put it down to 2.6GHz and so far so good. After a few test tries with 3Dmark06, my motherboard monitor graph showed my max CPU temp was 57 degree's celsius @ 2.8GHz. Seems pretty reasonable to me... however I will be picking up an aftermarket cooler regardless, which is reccomended for this CPU? I want to spend under $80 USD Thanks!
 
Your doing ok but I wouldn't worry about the the temps too much , just put your own temps and put the core temp max at 79c. That is around 60c normal .

Don't believe what core temps and the utility I would touch the HSF when its running orthos and if you see its not as hot as its showing then don't worry.

I have seen it go to 96c for 4hours 27minutes and my cpu E6600 works better than any cpu that I have had to date. Its been 6 months and its still going strong .

Get 1meg pi with superpi modXS1.5 20sec. ;)

And if there was an issue with the heatsink mounting preventing good thermal contact with the cpu the heatsink would remain nice and cool while you cooked your processor, well it would thermal trip but main point is still valid.

I often recommend the "finger" probe on memory sticks as there is seldom (never) any temp monitoring possbile on them. It is a trivial matter to check with other ASUS owners and determine what cpu temp monitoring software is accurate.

Whatever you are using to measure temps is seriously borked, TCC is 85C for that processor.

check the intel board with the overclocks , I at one time had the highest overclock on air for the E6600 and it lasted around 4-5 months before the 680i started to show up stable and the temps were as I have mentioned.

Intel TCC chart is a guideline for oem manufacturer , I have tested the waters , you are using charts , the temps I assure you were not borked , I had a problem mounting the HSF which means it wasn't dissipating heat as it should have been but it still did not throttle , if it did then it wouldn't have passed the 4.5hours of orthos.

Later with better mounting the temps did go down and I could have pushed it further but never got round doing it.

You have to see it to believe it , you will also see the temps for when its not at 100% on both cores
 
unless youre folding and such, the way you test stability is it with things you ACTUALLY use. games, etc...my optoron 170 has been 100% stable in all my games even through some 5 hour marathon gaming sessions i have been doing. i couldn't care less whether its stable in some immaterial utility like ortho or prime or anything else besides my games for that matter. I don't test how well my passat can handle driving through 2 feet of mud, same applies to my computer.

I went with the Tuniq from that chart -- 3rd best cooling performance with a cheaper price then #1 or 2 -- it's only $55 from frozencpu.com. The thermalrights are both more and don't come with a fan. My Tuniq will show up tomorrow and I'll be installing it this weekend, if you want to wait for my thoughts on it then. From everything I've read it is huge and requires a good sized case. I have a Cooler Master Centurion case, we'll see how it goes. I'm fairly sure I'll have to remove the CPU air tunnel though.
