E3110 vs E8400

hello...i'm doing some research for around month-end buy maybe

at tankguys.com , the E3110 OEM = $224,99 and the E8400 OEM = $229,99

if you were to choose one of those 2, which one would you go with ?

mobo is still a dilemma between the DFI LP DK P35-T2R , GA DS3L , Abit P35-E (don't focus on mobo as of now)

and cooling, I was thinking the zalman 9700 , full copper

but as of those 2 cpu's ... which one would you go with ?

For a second there, I thought the "E3110" was the 45nm version of the E2140.

My thoughts on this:

After pretty much going through hell as a result of decided to get (on more or less a whim) an X3220 instead of a Q6600 (both 2.4Ghz 1066Mhz FSB rated quads with 9x multis, same cache sizes, etc...) just trying to find a board that'll play nice with the thing I now /fully/ support what most of the [H] staff already repeat on a regular basis:

Desktop CPUs for Desktop boards.
Server CPUs for Server boards.
Do not mix them.

It may work perfectly... it may be torture. They are not the same, as the Xeon identifies itself to the machine differently (uses different microcode). Given Xeons are pretty much never officially supported on desktop boards, I cannot recommend you play the game I have been for a few weeks now.

From what I understand, they are one in the same. I have an E3110 that works perfectly fine on an IP35-E. Nothing weird is happening. Go with either of those processors.

Same here. I just bought the IP35 Pro not a week ago. I thought I would need another processor just in case to flash the BIOS to the latest version. However, the board obviously is real new as the BIOS recognized the processor and booted just fine. I am running at 9x400 @ 1.250v no problems with stability. Using the Ultima 90 I leave my CPU at 28C - 32C idle and 32C - 38C load while playing games. Haven't tested a true 100% load for long periods of time, but it hits right around 42C without the AC5 being "burned in".

E3110 = E8400 accept for one small thing that Xeon processors, being server chips are usually higher binned. So in theory, it would be better, and thus be an even better chip. In stock in many places for a lower price...

I don't think I'm wrong about this, but correct me if I am.

Core 2 LGA775 server chips have not been better or worse than desktop chips, I believe, except that they have different microcode and this risks incompatibility with some motherboards.

A quick search shows a lot out there getting over 4GHz on the Xeon, so that is a good sign.

The also have the same CPUID string so.... won't that mean it looks the same to the board?

My e3110 is running at 3.6GHz at 1.225V real (1.345V in BIOS) in my IP35-E right now.

If I had better RAM I might try pushing it to 4.0GHz.
