Same setup as in sig, except the quad has been replaced. :D

Will be running prime overnight to test for stability.

4ghz.jpg

I was going to say, it would be really awesome if it was actually stable at that voltage. I'm guessing you'll need to bump it up to at least 1.275

Why would you replace a quad at 3.4 GHz with a dual at 4 GHz?

Don't encode video, don't fold, games don't care about the extra 2 cores (supcom the exception to this.)

I wanted more MEGAHURTZ.

If I want to go quad, and games actually give a shit there are 2 extra cores to utilize....I can snag a 9450/3350 for $200-ish down the line a bit...or just go Nehalem and get it over with :)

Getting there. Had my GTL's set to .61 w/ VTT @ 1.20

It didn't like that.

Put the GTL's up to .63 w/VTT @ 1.25.

I've actually been able to lower my cpu vcore (1.216v right now) by going this route. Priming now (about an hour in)

Did it actually cost you money for that swap?
Or did you sell your Q6600 for profit? If you actually spent money (lost money) for the E8400 switch, then you're a fool.

Sorry.
It's a lot of work and money spent for, what? Bigger internet e-peen for the big four-zero?
*shrug*

Straight up trade.

I was moving my rig from a P180 to a Lian Li PC-7B anyway, so it made sense to do this right now, while the rig was going to be torn apart anyway.

I've seen a lot of people recently who are so incredibly enamored of getting to 4.0 that it's funny. I would rather have a quad at even stock than have a quad and go back to a dual.

To be quite honest...I was bored with the Q66, that I had for year. It wasn't an incredible clocker.

When some games make use of the extra 2 cores, I'll go back to a quad (9450/3350) on the cheap, down the road.

Nice, yeah almost all appz/gamez are single-threaded with the exception of a few multi-threaded appz/gamez. So any appz/gamez will eat up a faster dual core since they will only use 1 core anyway than a slower quad. Good trade IMO. I will go quad myself when most/all appz/gamez make use of all 4 cores.

Know what would be awesome? If new compiled programs for Windows compiled into massively multithreaded versions by their nature. I mean the only reason to run a single-thread app now-a-days if it you REALLY need it (running a specific algorithm that cannot be efficiently broken down). I'm really disappointed that no one has made the move to do this yet. Still, nice 4000 clock. Not sure I'd have made the decision, but it seems to have made you happy >.>

lemme get this straight, you would rather have a 2.4ghz quad rather than a 4.0ghz dual?

lemme get this straight, you would rather have a 2.4ghz quad rather than a 4.0ghz dual?

yes, because I buy parts to last. The op "got bored of his quad" "had it a whole year". Read that and think about it. A year. I have a hard time believing people have become that petty, its like computer related ADD or something. His quad supposedly wasn't that great an overclocker, so what was it doing? 3ghz? What was he doing that a 3ghz quad couldn't handle?

edit: oh, wait, no, the OPs sig reveals his Q6600 was doing 3.44, my GOD how he must have suffered!

Losing 2 cores to tack on 600mhz is stupid, theres no other way to call it. Utopia is absolutely right.

Well he and other people like getting stuff and just tweaking getting the most MHZ out of them for the hell of it. While you on the other hand likes coming into other people's thread and trolling just for the hell of it.

Anyways OP, where can I get that wallpaper? :)

When you start a thread for something you're essentially asking for opinions. Get over it.

If the OP wants to trade his quad for a dual, so be it. It's his money, not yours.

It's stupid to you, not the OP. He didn't ask for opinions on whether he should change his quad to a dual.

I wouldn't do it either, but it's not my post, it's the OPs.

Threadcrap elsewhere.

Starting a thread is asking for opinions, otherwise its just the OP sitting there screaming "LOOK AT MY E-PENIS!" "LOOK AT IT, ITS HUUUGGGEEE!!"
If you want to reduce your time at the computer to looking longingly upon his e-penis I suppose thats you, but I would rather discuss the subject at hand:

Performance is not about running super pi.
Real world applications @4ghz on a dual have little to no performance benefit over having a quad at 3.4 or 3.6 and having that extra horsepower there for when you actually need work done encoding, or modeling/rendering, etc.

I DARE anyone in this thread who disagrees with me, to show me otherwise. Show me real world performance differentials that matter. Show me something that supports yourself and the OP and is not a post screaming "Look at my E-penis!".

And lets be really specific here: a game running at 245fps vs a game running a 230fps...no, thats not a difference that matters.

That is not what this thread is about.
Furthermore, he already gave his explanation as to why he did it. Apparently you don't like his explanation and can't let it go.

You are high-jacking his thread. We understand you aren't happy with his decision. Nobody cares.

Guess I'll go elsewhere. You people are a joke. You sit and all you give a shit about is "playing" super pi or "playing" x whatever benchmark. You do little of nothing but scream about how great you are over a fucking number. Get some goddamn perspective.

You idiots should take a look at CGSociety.org forums sometime, which is filled with professional artists and animators. Most of them know little to nothing about computers, and they actually Create with them, using them as a tool to their full potential. When they post something it's a work of art, something to actually be proud of.

These "omg look at me!" posts on this forum disgust me. None of you can offer up anything in defense of them other than "its his e-penis screaming thread, back off".

You people aren't computer enthusiasts, you're fucking pathetic.

I know I'll be banned over this, and really don't give a shit anymore. This isn't a community anyone should be proud to be a part of.

I'll go do something with my computer, while you idiots continue to jerk off over your big number.

I agree on principle, but not on the delivery.
It's HardForum for goodness sake, I don't know what else you expect to see except e-peen threads.

You and utopia are so far from being [ Hard ] you guys need to go over to nancy-boy forums, or www.patchworkpansy.com
man everyone KNOWS 4Ghz is the big 4.0 GHZ, just because you haven't the hardware, skill or whatever to go for it don't dog on someone who knows a cooler running CPU, faster gaming and that nice feeling of seeing 4Ghz on post is better.
Everyone and their cousin has a quad at 3.6, it's the middle of the pack.
Thats the idea w/ 4Ghz. the PC is at it's limit, the bleeding edge, pushed past what's normal, running faster than anything you can buy or in your case faster than a quad.
if you guys don't get that go buy a used eMachine. :)

utopia = limp gawd
and retro, you need to go back and remember what you are even doing looking at this thread, maybe you should go live up to your potential, or maybe your PC's potential.
LOL
Man what's with you guys? do you even know what the HOCP is all about or even stands for?!

yea thats right and because guys disagreed with you, they are losers.

this is hard overclocking page, we are not on the cg artists page, as wonderful as that may be.

op - i did same. get somewhat better performance @ 4300 on the e8400 (same same 3110) than the q6600 @ 3700. and dont get the horrible temps, with same vcore. the 3 ghz stuff had been done, i had been running 3g plus since x2 3800 days. it was time for 4ghz.

It's in your head.

@ thread:
I'd prefer to not be lumped into the same category as the e-peen raving person a few posts up. I just originally had to ask the question of why someone would choose to swap a Quad at 3.4 for a dual at 4 GHz. If you want to do it for e-bragging then it's obviously you're decision. I just don't understand people.

But please don't try to justify it as if a clean 4 GHz has any noticable, valuable real world improvements. I think we're all smart enough to know, it does not. So trying to clarify the switch with that rationale just makes it even more embarrassing.

If you're going to hit 4 GHz for the sake of hitting four-zero, then at least admit to it. But don't insult yourself and the rest of us by pretending there's an actual reward for doing so.

Utopia, you sir are a little off if your idea of a peen is hardware.
with your "logic" we should just run a P3 at 1Ghz., we can all work with it and check our email and edit some photos, and maybe print some spreadsheets.
What are you? What makes you think your opinions even have any weight here at the H?
You are overclocking your quad to 3.6, why?! gasp...you must need a bigger peen
(Everyone and their cousin has a quad at 3.6, it's the middle of the pack.)
what, it's not sufficient at stock speeds?
what can you do overclocked that it couldn't do at stock?
You still can't play Crysis at 1920x1440 4AA/16AF same as anyone else.
And it looks like you sig shows off your wee-peen, I mean epeen, so where do you get off acting like you're above the whole thing, calling people fools?
Just becasue you haven't hit 4ghz don't get all sour grapes over it.

Let's keep the thread in context, please.

I was referring to the OP in reference to swapping out a Q6600 for an E8400 just to hit 4 GHz, and anyone else who would run a specific piece of hardware just to reach 4 GHz. Or anyone who OC's to 4 GHz "just to reach 4 GHz". Same goes for any C2D owner who would swap their current C2D for an E8400.

You're trying to generalize my post into the short and sweet statement that "Any overclocking is nothing more than e-peen bragging," which I didn't say, and I obviously don't think is true... Since I'm an overclocker. And since you asked, my Q6600 is Prime95 12-hour stable at 9x445.

The system you see in my signature is my first build in about 4 years, also my first Intel build. Nothing was purchased with the sole goal of vanity overclocking. Can it be overclocked? Sure. Why should I force it to run at stock when it's begging me to be overclocked?

Am I swapping out my GTX for a GTS 512, just to overclock higher? No.
Am I swapping out my Q6600 for a 45nm just to overclock higher? No.

I think you see my point.
Like I said, though, I just don't understand why some people would choose to (quite literally) waste cash. I suppose it's like a really expensive way of collecting stamps.

@OP:
Sorry for ruining your thread.
Didn't realize my original question would take the thread so off-track.

That's still way south of 4Ghz.
and anyone who thinks hotter, slower quads are somehow better is like thinking Hummers are better than a Lamborghini.
I'm saying that why did you overclock your quad? it's no different than why he overclocked his cpu,
the difference is 4ghz. is faster, cooler and better than 3.6, no matter how many times you try and tell yourself it isn't
Think of it this way, you probably won't because it might cost you some $, you already made it clear w/ your profit comment, but maybe if you actually tried a dual at 4Ghz. you'd understand

And since you asked said:
I didn't ask, but you saying this proves my point perfectly :)

I DO ask this again, what can you do overclocked that it couldn't do at stock?

I already told you, the only reason I originally brought up the issue is because he said he swapped his Q6600 for an E8400 to reach 4 GHz. If someone buys an E8400 for a first-time build and hits 4 GHz, then more power to them. I just don't understand why someone would go through all the trouble on a C2D system to put a new E8400 in there.

I guess some magical performance boost unlocks when you hit the clean four-zero, otherwise it doesn't make any sense. Anything past 3 GHz you see fewer and fewer performance gains as clock speed increases. The difference from 3.6 GHz to 4 GHz is about 130 fps vs 140 fps in games. Would you notice that difference?

I didn't ask, but you saying this proves my point perfectly
You did, read the last line of your previous post.
I'm giving up, though, since you clearly are disregarding my posts. I already told you that I have nothing against overclocking.

*sigh*...
I hope the others in this thread can read and understand what I'm saying. As far as this discussion goes, it's over for the time being. Gotta hit the hay.

yawn...you can't understand the similarity of overclocking? sorry to hear that, in a few years you might

and I never asked for your supposed stability stats of your hot running medium clocked quad

edit:

eh, funny how this has turned to shit so bad.

Anyways, nice oc man. Congrats, wish I had one.

kk I had to respond to this. I should pm, but as it turns out, I'm not man enough, I gotta publically straighten this guy out.

People come to this forum who have seldom worked with computer parts and asked for advice and almost every time they get it. The people who don't don't because they post at 3am and no ones on to help. Thats one thing we do off the top of my head.

I can't find the relavence/allusion in your 2nd paragraph.

"omg look at me!" How about "omg look at me!". Or how about "omg look at me!". Wait one more, "omg look at me!" When you do something cool, you want to show it to people. Weather its for fame or not is irellavent, it's cool. If your not intrested, don't pay attention.

If this isn't a statement thats more reflective of its poster, I don't know what is. If your willing to judge an intire forum with thousands of members across probably every country on this planet (A shout out to my friends in luxemburg! ;)), from every race and both sexs, and every possible background and my brothers who can spell, base everyone here on this thread, I've got one thing to say to you. Zee hail.

Hope you are banned over this, certainly deserve to be, but then I suppose that would fulfill your feeling of how unfairly treated you are and how everyone else is so wrong headed wouldn't it?

oooo I like this one. "Something". Havn't got an idea yet I suppose? You WANT to do "something" with your computer don't you? mmm yeah rub a little "something" all over that hard drive and lick it off...
ok thats gross jesus where do you get your sick mind from man? damned perverted hypocrite. I enjoy clocking the bejesus out of various parts, and I enjoy quietly boasting about how my $183 C2D E6300 performs better than my rich friends $1000 X6800.
edit: oh god the irony.

Lemme ask you one thing before you get banned, do you know anything about north bridges or south bridges, or about the FSB? Or about what Prime 95 is doing? Do you know anything about Voltage or Circuitry? Do you know anything about what
V-bulleten is doing this very second as I type this very post? Do you know anything about program security? Are you willing to discuss said topics?

No? Then you don't belong on this forum. This is where we discuss that stuff --and yes, we post super PI scores from time to time.

And for anyone still reading my post and reading the person I quoted for the first time and having alot to say about it, be a bigger man than me, do it in PM.

I think you've rather much shown how stupid you are by linking that and not even realizing its a photorealistic render. Look down the page champ. You aren't going to "straighten" anything out. You're a pompous what, 18 year old "consultant". Meaning you what, build computers for people in your spare time? Come now.

But then if you didn't have the sense to realize that ' hey, I'm on a computer graphics forum, so that must be a render ', then you aren't very intelligent after all.

My page 1 challenge still stands. Show me real apps where a 4ghz dual core has real world practical advantage over a 3.4 or 3.6 quad. Show me. Stop LIPPING OFF and show me.

The truth is that none of you can do it. The apps that otherwise would show a difference are by default better served on quads, rendering, encoding video, etc. 'My game runs 15fps faster' is a laughable reason to move from a quad at 3.44 to a dual at 4.

And if its not CPU dependent, then its GPU dependent, like a wide variety of games.

Some of you have chosen to confuse showboating and performance...and that doesn't make you [H].

I'm a RN kid, what have you got, an A+ ? :p

You asked "Show me real apps where a 4ghz dual core has real world practical advantage over a 3.4 or 3.6 quad"
and vice versa-
They are equivelant, some apps / games favor the Q, some the dual
ANd if you try and debate that your are just silly :)

What in God's name happened here? lol

Reason for trading my poor overclocking quad for a dual

1. I wanted to.
:D

Look, I don't buy parts for longevity. This is a hobby to me, and it's fun. I obtain parts to push their level of performance, till they have no more to give. Then I get bored of them, and get something else. What's the fucking problem here? I don't give a shit about "real world" gains. I give a shit about having fun with my hobby.

I DO NOT, and probably will not do the following things on my machine

1. Encode Video
2. Render anything
3. Graphic Design

What advantage does a hot running, voltage sucking quad offer me, with that being said?
As mentioned, the quad I have overclocked poorly. It was a mediocre quad. It ran hot, and took a lot of voltage, to even get windows to load @ 3.6. With my setup, I couldn't get it prime stable @ those levels. This irritated me.

So I dumped the fucking quad for something that does 4ghz @ a lot less voltage than the quad took for 3.44ghz.

You want to know why I started the thread?

To show the community my results on the 3110. It's the hardforum, wtf? Should I post this on the clevelandbrowns.com forum instead? I thought it was fucking cool, that this 3110 could get prime stable @ 4ghz, with 1.248v. That's pretty low voltage for 4ghz, from what I've seen. Jesus Christ....lol
