e2180 HSF. should it be so small?

Well I finally got my e2180 today and when I saw the stock HSF i was a bit surprised. I have read the HSF was "small" but this thing is just like 1 inch tall. I read a lot of people getting the e2140 to 2180 chips up to 3ghz with the stock HSF. I havent tested the temps yet cause I still don't have my case & psu . But how far has anyone gotten with the HSF OC wise? My budget is just 20 bucks and I saw this. Which I heard other [H] members say it was enough for them. In the not so distant future I hope I can get a zerotherm nirvana or tuniq tower .

Well, if you do a little digging on the [H]forums, you will find few people who are doing serious clocking on stock coolers. I myself am running a Q6600 on a Theraltake Maxorb that I paid 50 bux for. The problem is, it does not have a 4 pin power cable like this Rosewill, so my MOBO cannot control the fan speed and I am a little over sensitive to noise.

While I could not find any reviews on the web about this model, if you dig through the reviews on Newegg, you will find several Q6600 owners who are very happy with this fan. I also got a rave review from a [H]ocper in another thread earlier this week about this fan, so I am going to order one for my Q6600 system shortly.

It sounds like a no brainer for an E2180 owner who wants to do a little clocking. It should do much better than the stock fan.

The biggest hurdle with the stock HSF is the alum base. The smaller HSF must be new though, cause my E2180 came with a full sized one. Same size as the copper HSF that came with my E6420 and Q6600. The only "small" HSF I've gotten so far is the one that came with my E8400. For the record, I got my 2180 to 3.1ghtz with this HS and this fan. I really wouldn't recommend it though, cause mounting it is a total pain. Currently the 2180 is running @ 2.5ghtz in my Shuttle. The only limit here is inability to set memory speed or divider manually.

Well it seems I should be able to get 2.8 to 2.9 with the stock HSF. It just looks so tiny, i guess those 3 120mm fans in the case should come in handy right? DAMN THOSE FEDERALES! if it werent' for them I would already have all my system parts and would have to suffer waiting. I'm literally loosing sleep over getting this rig set up. It's my real first build, i'm going from a p4 3.0, onboard, 760mb ddr400, to 4gigs of ram hd3850 and this processor so i hope there's a difference .

I'm using a stock e6600 cooler on my e2180. I'm not overclocking right now and that heatsink stays very cool and the fan spins way down. Makes for a nice quiet rig.

I'm playing around with my E2160 @ 3Ghz and stock voltage/TRUE right now and my Prime95 Coretemp load temps are 37C...something doesn't seem right.

The arctic freeze pro 7 is the way to go. Take in mind that, th AFP7 is HUGE! I didn't expect it to be that large.

There are a lot of clones out there. The Rosewill and Coolermaster ones both work decently for about $10 cheaper.

I've made enough to buy 2 Q6600 from building a couple cheap computers off the 2180 @ 3Ghz. Man that thing is insanely cheap. Computers are free for me nowadays, I hope the above tells ya how! Good luck.
