Is a E1200 strong enough to drive 2x GPU2 clients?

I'm building a cheap GPU boxen. (just got a 3X PCIe mobo used for 55 bucks) and I need a proc to go in it. Am I skimping too much or will that be enough.

Best I can tell, if I use vista I might be able to get away with all 3 lanes populated with that chip. The GPU2 only uses 25% of a single core on my Q6600.

I'm just getting a bit fed up with trying to run SMP and GPU on the same box. So with this box I can move my newest 8800GS into the new boxen, get 1 or 2 more GPUs and take the Q6600 that is powering the before mentioned 8800GS and put it back to running notfreds SMP and get true use out of that proc.

How this will be sold to the wife: "This new motherboard has that RAID thing that I was telling you about so we can make sure all of our digi photos are backed up..... like our wedding pics."

Yes this folding boxen will be a "file server" ;)

Sure, it will be able to drive 2 8800GS especially if you run Vista on it. Or you can also build a true Windows Home Server box like I did and use it as file server and computers backup (the backup works surprisingly good and it saved my life once when a HDD failed, losing only the stuff I did the current day).

I like the home sever box idea, but the software cant be moved to another box once installed :(

You think I can get away with 3 GPUs with that proc? or a E21XX?

WHS is a OS and you are free to move it. Just make sure it's 1 license per box with up to 10 clients.

From Newegg:

This OEM System Builder Channel software requires the assembler to provide end user support for the Windows software and cannot be transferred to another computer once it is installed.

If I remember correctly you can move it, as long as you are willing to call MS and have them unlock the activation for you. Might involve fibbing to them ("I swear, all I did was put in a new video card and now it says it isn't activated anymore"). Google should be able to tell you for sure.

This is why I haven't activated any of my OEM Vista's yet.

From my understanding, minor changes like video cards sound cards etc shouldn't trigger a re-activation but swapping out a mobo will. "Well my mobo crapped out and I've had so much trouble with it I went to a new mobo"

Yes, not a biggie for me. All it matter is that you say you replaced a defective component and it ask for a new activation then they will do it without problems. All what matter for them is that you use 1 license per computer which you will follow without issues. The only people who get shafted is the honest ones like : "I replaced the old file server with a new one, care to reactivate" ? Even in that case, you still get a 50% shot to get reactivated.

Also, since a file server should be good for 2-3 years of use, this is a minor inconvenience. I built mine to last at least 3 years with good quality components (Asus P5K-E motherboard, Mushkin memory, Antec Earthwatts PSU, etc...).

And before I forget, during the lifetime of the license, you might reactivate it 2-3 times, that's not a problem. If you reactivate like once per month, they will surely deny due to abose.

That seems awfully high. The GPU2 client running on my 8800GT with Vista64 only uses 3-5% of a single core on my Q6600@3.6.

Maybe something else like the core too

I am running a GTX260, maybe that has a bit to do with it.

Also it seems that windows says I'm using 10%, stupid windows widget

If you plan on doing the windows home server thing it only works with other computers running 32 bit vista not 64 bit. I would have gotten a copy but my farm is all 64 bit. :(

3 gpus can get kind of hot....are they going to fold nekkid ;)

Bout the next best thing to it. :D

I wont run a GPU with out support from the case (I think it's asking too much from a small strip of plastic)

The case will be in the basement with all of the sides off, and probably a few 120mm fans on it.

I'm going to start out with the one GPU (and quickly add a 2nd) The 3 will take some planning. You have to get a bit creative with the PSU at that point and I will wait for a deal to come along that can support 3 GPUs.

We will see.

This will be my project for when I want to expand. All I have to do is add GPUs till I run out of slots or power :p

My farm have 2 Vista 64 boxes and it works great. That's what the WHS Power Pack 1 add and I think it's now RTM, hence available to the public.

PowerPack 1 is officially released, and will be passed down via Windows Update on the 12th. Its also available now on MS' site. I'm playing with a 120 day trial of it now on a box, and like it so far.

It looks like I can dl and try for 120 days.

I'll give it a try. If anything it keeps me from buying another copy vista for a while. :p

I found a E2140 for 48 shipped, so that will be the CPU....... I'm hunting from RAM.....

This is building a folding boxen on the cheep :D

mobo $55
CPU $50
OS Free (for now)
PSU - I have
Case - I have
GPU1 - I have
GPU2 - looking
GPU3 - In time
RAM - $37

Yeah, good idea with the 120 days trail to see if you like it :)

Definitely get the Corsair TX750 over the crappy Tt.

Is this too good of a deal to pass up for a PSU to power 3 8800GT/GS ?

I also just ordered 2 of the 120 day eval for WHS for the box. shipping was even free. To bad they said it will take 1-3 weeks for delivery :(

For a multi GPU rig (possibly 3!) your rig is all about power. Try not to skimp here.
That Thermaltake would do ok for 2 (depending on what you put in) but might have trouble with 3. The Corsair looks better. A PC Power& Cooling 750watt is $10 more than the corsair and has a 5 year warranty. I love PCP&C and they get great reviews.

If you are looking to put in more performance oriented cards as prices drop even these 750 watt PS might not cut it with 24/7 gpu load. I tend to be very conservative with powersupplies and don't mind spending extra money here so that a faulty unit doesn't take out my whole boxen when it dies. Everyone has their own comfort zone :)

Good luck. Glad I saw that about the 64 bit compatibility for WHS. I'll have to look into setting up a budget server to preserve my "wedding photos" too. ;)

Well I guess I'm not going to get $140 off a PSU very often.

I'm going to order the PC Power & Colling

It will be the most expensive part in the whole build :D

What about this PSU...... I'd figure I'd look around Ebay fore buying on the egg.

That guy should be ok, but you'll have to use an adapter for the 3rd card as it says its only got 2PCI-E connectors. Also it looks like its one of the longer models, so be aware if you're pretty cramped up in front of the psu. Lastly, not sure if this is true or not, but I believe that this is an older PC&C model, the efficiency might not be quite as high as the 750w or the corsair. Just somehting to think about.

I would go with the 750w PCP&C. This is what I'm running for my 9800gx2 and I love it. I also have the 610w silencer running my 8800gt it is great as well.

The ebay item is an EOL product:
http://www.pcpower.com/products/description/Turbo_Cool_850_SSI/index.html
According to the spec sheet it is 54A, 60A peak.

Both claim 83% efficiency.

I think I would go with the PCP&Cooling 750 watt over that 850. As said above the older 850 model only delivers 54 amps on the 12V rails (60 peak) whereas the 750 delivers 60A (I am assuming that is not a peak value-but the spec sheet doesn't say).
It also has 4 PCIE connectors with two of them being the 8 pin kind in case you want to put on a beefy card.
If you want to go big for power the current PCP&C 860 delivers 64 amps/70 peak which might make a difference in a 3 card scenario where one of the cards is like a GTX260 class card. The down side is that it is about $200 with a rebate :( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703013

I have a PCP&C 610 watt PS that is running a Q6600 and 2 8800GT's with no problems. I also have a PCP&C 750 on my main rig that took a lightning strike  and is still working just fine (the mobo didn't do quite as well).

Lightning is such a funny animal. I had a friend that got hit and it took his cable modem, router, and the ethernet port on his mobo, but other than that his pc was fine. He bought all new stuff and put the coax for the cable on a new surge protector.

I went with the corsair PSU, mostly due to the: 4x 6+2 PCIe connectors.

That and it a bit cheaper. ;)

Now I just have to wait for the parts to come to ge the box up and running with 1 GPU.

I have a bunch of stuff on ebay, once some of it sells I'll be picking up more GPUs
