Dx10?

I'm trying to collect some cash for my next PC upgrade which will be for Vista and DX10 card. I plan to get a Wii and 360 but PC gaming is my main priority and wanna make sure I have enough cash for PC gaming. I was wondering how affordable will the first DX10 cards be at first or the first few months? Meaning like in the $300 range. Are they just going to be high end premium cards at first?

Im sure when they first come out they will be expensive. But then lower models will show up or even higher models will be made and the first models will become cheaper.

The standard pattern is to release the high end parts first and "wow" everyone and then release the lower/mid range parts for those who don't want to spend $500 for a video card. How well a mid range DX10 card will run? Who knows at this point.

is it just the $500 dx10 cards to be released this year or can we expect the cheaper gt/xl versions of those cards to be released this year as well? because theres no way i will ever buy a $500 videocard.

Vista wont be released untel 2007. At least thats the rumor floating around. Dont get a WII. Nintendo sucks and they have sucked since the gamecube. N64 and gameboy DS was there last great gaming related achivment. They are going to die soon and the wii so far makes it seem more like so.

Where have you been? The Wii is THE console this time around.

the DX10 cards (when released) will have a full range of cards for it all the way from the ultra high end down to the cheap'os

such a supported and very strong opinion...

I could not find anything on the windows vista site that says you need Direct X 10.
This was pulled directly from the windows website.

"GPU — PC systems should have a DirectX 9 class graphics processor.

Recommendations
Windows Vista offers significant improvements to the graphics user experience. To take advantage of these advances in the graphics user experience, graphics processor will need to support Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM). Graphics processors capable of supporting WDDM:

• Are designed to ensure that graphics user experience scales up with hardware capabilities.

• Offer improved graphic stability and performance.

• May be able to support additional desktop productivity features."

Why do people need DX10 for Vista? what happens if you don`t?

DX10 is part of Vista. You don't need a DX10 video card to run Vista, but of course you won't be able to play DX10 games without a DX10 video card.

i really dont understand though... cant you just download dx10 or wont vista come with dx10?

Vista comes with DX10, you cannot download DX10 for XP.

While Vista will provide the API, you still need DX10 hardware to accelerate games written under the DX10 API. Just like you need a DX9 card to run DX9 games. Nothing really has changed with that aspect of upgrading, it's been this way with every new version of DX. It is just that now DX10 will be exclusive to MS's next OS.

the reason i was confused was because for example say you had dx 8 or something and the new game you wanted to play ran on dx 9 you could just go to the dx website and download the game and it would usually work fine... or am I wrong?

If the game is only capable of being run using DX10 hardware then it will not run without the hardware. What this means is that there is not a path for DX9 only hardware. This all depends on the game developers.

ok guys lets think about this for a moment.. ok DX10...hmmm... sounds expensive however you dont need it right off the bat.. i mean.. how long has DX9 been out..and most all the games i play including FEAR and COD2 support DX8 and some DX7 shaders... i have seen a 1.2P3 with 340mg ram and a TI 4200 play COD 2 very smoothly... wow... thats impressive i mean.. that like.. wt almost 3 generations ago hardware... i for one am sporting 7800GTXs at the moment so im not affraid to put $$$ into video cards.. but i am still convinced any high end machine today will be fine in at least the next 2 years if not the next 3.... well there is my take on it...

the new flight sim and crysis games are slated for early 2007 release and are DX10 games

what brents trying to say is...

DX10 is vista exlusive, unless you have Vista you won't have DX10, this is the only thing thats changing (other then the API of course) with the DX10 release

before when a new version of DX came out you could download it, and play those games with that support (and have the supported effects with the card that supported that as well, DX9 games, with D3D9 and a D3D9 compliant card installed on your computer), this changes slightly with DX10, you will not have the ability to download DX10 on a seperate OS other then Vista

ok the main thing i am concerned aout is.. are the new games only going to thave DX10 ... or will they have optional DX9 support... if they dont it will be a huge loss... since i dunno about most pple but i cant afford to re build next year.. considering i just built 6 months ago...

got me

im sure most game developers will take on the DX10 path in the near future

and you only have to upgrade your card and OS to use DX10, its not a huge upgrade at all...

completely depends on the developer, do they want to support a DX9 path in their game, from what I know about Crysis it will have a DX9 and DX10 path, Flight Sim I'm not sure, of course Halo 2 will be DX10 only

As to Flight Sim X, there are screenies showing the difference between DX9 and DX10. Since those are shown in two modes, I suspect that Dx9 support is available for Flight Sim.

IMHO no-one except MS will drop dx9 for the first 6 month to a year or even longer after Vista is out.. Unless, of course, they want to limit their sales to only people with new computers with dx10 capable gpus.... That would be a slim market indeed for the first year or so after Vista becomes the OEM standard..
Most people don't buy a new pc every year, and many seldomly upgrade the pc's they have.. Rather they just buy a new pc every 2 years give or take..

considering this time we are going to have onboard video supporting DX10 before we get it in the high end

Halo 2 will be Vista only. Last I checked, it may still support D3D9Ex though.

it is a huge upgrade to those of us that cant just go out and spen $1000 on vid cards the year after they built.. im just worried that my SLI setup wont play any new games on the market.. say.. this time next year.. i mean i plan on re building in 2 years but not next year by any means...

Heh. Well you should take comfort in the fact that there are some of us using AMD XP 1800 systems with a GF 4 MX card with 64mb of ram. And somehow managed to get AOE 3 running on it. ;) I would imagine any SLI setup card with 256mb memory on PCI-E should last at least 2 years :p
