I've gotten quite a bit of use out of my DVD player since i got it last in June of 05, and now when i burn a DVD sometimes my burning software freezes up, or other times i'll just have a bad burn, and i was just wondering how long does the average low end, and high end dvd burners last? How many burns can i expect out of them? thanks in advance for your help.
 
Thousands of burns. For premium burners I expect more. For a $40 burner, I expect at least 6 months of service :)
 
Is Plextor's durability in this regard still as famed as it once was? I remember back when I got my first burner (one of the first 8x CD burners, SCSI deal by Plextor), when coasters were a lot more common, Plextor claimed how they used more metal gears than the competition, etc. I even heard from a number of people that did heavy duty burning at the time how their Plextor drives would outlast everything by such a margin...

Haven't really paid attention to any of that lately and I've just bought two cheap (but good) NEC drives the last two times I needed one based on Anand's old round-ups... I'm making a gift to someone I know will give heavy duty use to their drive though, just wondering if there was really any truth to Plextor's old claims.

Otherwise I'll probably just get a BenQ for the novelty of Lightscribe...
 
I've seen mixed personal reviews of plexwriters as of late.

I have a 712 thats been flawless for me for 15 months now, however, two co-workers had to send their 716's in for RMA; one was DOA and one failed after 11 months. Another co-worker has his 712 working flawlessly for a similar period as myself.

I got the plexwriter because of the burn quality and the name. I just ordered a BenQ 1655 because I wanted a 2nd burner for a 2nd box and that seems to be the best bang for the buck if you wanted (marginally) better burn quality than the NEC. The NEC's are GREAT, don't get me wrong, but I went with the BenQ for the "little better" factor. For $50, I'm not going to complain too much if my burner craps out in a year. For $150, I'll be a little less forgiving.
 
I've had my Lite-On for ages and it's still going strong. Can't even remember the last bad burn actually...
