this may be the wrong forum but has anybody had any luck repairing dvd cd rom internal drives-i have a bunch of older ones to use for parts just hate to throw them in the trash

They can generally be repaired, but it's rarely worth the time or the cost. If you're lucky they may just have a dirty lens or a snapped belt for the motor. If you're not they might need a new laser or a new motor. It could also need the laser to be aligned, which may or may not be easy, depending on the drive.

Seeing as how brand new DVD RW drives are under $20 these days I just can't seem to figure out why someone would waste their time on older drives when the newer ones will most likely be faster than the old parts you have laying around.

i just think that we are a society that throws too many resources in the trash to buy new stuff made in some foreign country I'll try cleaning the lens as it seems to spin up. Thanks for the info

Bring them to a recycling center.

I completely agree with you and hate it when people replace things for crappy reasons. "Oh I got bored of the smartphone I bought 6 months ago so I upgraded" f-ing really?

But unfortunately repair parts for old electronics are often not worth it still.

recycling is good but most electronics are really not recycled yet they are just now getting the machinery in the recycling industry to deal with the newer electronics and until there is a good profit margin on them they just go into the trash or worse yet into the incinerator for heating
