Dusting and such

I'm trying to get into better habits of cleaning my gaming rig case, but there are some things I'm not sure about.

1) Should I get a free-standing fan that filters dust and stuff from the air? Does this reduce dust and such that gets caught in my intake filters, and whatever gets through?

2) Is compressed air the best dust remover, or should I go for products that have their own substance for removing dust? Sometimes small layers of dust are left over, and I want to return my case to pristine condition.

3) Can switching to water-cooling actually have an impact on reducing dust build up? Does water-cooling add additional dust concerns?

4) I have a cat, no I am not getting rid of her :p

I do monthly vacuum run over all intakes on my case and clean the filters. I also (every couple months) get the canned air out and work with the vacuum on the internals (always while computer is off!) The only reason a water setup would reduce dust would be one less fan blowing things around, however I assume you still have case fans blowing in/out which would attract dust on the intakes and inside. A passive cooling solution for everything would be your cleanest bet, however it might be a bit warm!

So is it bad to get dust cleaning canned substances or is it better to just stick to compressed air/co2?

I use my air compressor on mine. I take it out to the garage every 4-6 weeks. I make sure to not let the fans spin out of control and have at it with a blow-gun. I have found this to be the most effective method of "dusting".
