duron and ddr400

ok.. i actually took the time to read the memory faq post and a few things came up that i never though of before..

ok.. basically... i never thought about if it was good or bad to run ram speeds asynchronous with the fsb of a processor..

so here's the deal.. in my mom's computer... she has a duron 1.2ghz.. and 512 mb of ddr400 (3200).. the ddr memory did make a significant improvement in her computer's performance... but the motherboard was also replaced... and we quadrupled her memory...

anyways.... what is the fsb on a 1.2 ghz duron? 100mhz? if so, should i run her ddr400 at 200mhz? or leave it at 400? her computer actually runs really well right now.. so i am somewhat hesitant about messing with it... but could anyone give me insight to whether they think i should or not?

yes it is.... i guess what i am really asking here is... what is the FSB on a duron 1.2 ghz.... and if no one knows, or there is more than one answer to that question depending on what core the processor is, how can i find out what the fsb is on it without taking my mom's computer apart and pulling the heatsink off of her proc..?

if the processor is 166 fsb, then i would want to run the ram at 333, right? and so on...

Most durons are 100FSB (except for the 1.6-1.8s I think, those are 133). Your ram will be running at DDR200, or PC1600. I was thinking about that at one point where a 100FSB Athlon would run with DDR400 at 400, asynch. I'm not sure what the performance would be like though.

I think he meant running it at DD200. The Duron is a 100FSB.

The effect of running ram async with lets say 166FSB (DDR333) and ram at 200mhz (DDR400) is somewhat lesser performance since the increased bandwidth doesn't make up for the latency.

But with running ram async in your case, the increased bandwidth might make up for the increased latency since your gonna be doubling the speed of your ram. The only way to tell is to do some benchmarks and see. Sandra is a good place to start.

Is that Duron unlocked? If you can change the multi, lower it down and crank up the FSB...for example instead of a 12x multi with a 100FSB, try a 6x multi with a 200FSB.

The 1.6's and 1.8's run @ 133. ( and overclock like mad i must say, plus you can unlock the extra cache, the 1.8 is going to be my next athlon 2.4ghz in disguise )

Kind of a shame they dont get more attention, its really a gem.

But yea, the 1.2 runs @ 100. up to 1.4

From what i heard the new durons are unlocked i cant confirm this though.
