My parents were, uh, very religious and I wasn't aloud to play a lot of games. What I do remember is really enjoying Dune at a friend's house. I want to play one of them for old times sake. Which was better. Dune or Dune 2000?

Assuming you mean an RTS, you want Dune 2 or Dune 2000. Dune was a really old first person perspective game more like Myst than a shooter.

Dune 2 can be found as a free download in a number of places, Dune 2000 comes on a 2-3 cds as I recall. Dune 2000 is a much more updated version of Dune 2, but they're both fun to play. You'll need something like dosbox to run Dune 2, but Dune 2000 is windows native.

2000 is just a graphical update of dune2, the campaign and everything are exactly the same iirc.

i´ll go for dune2, the only problem with that game is that when u fire at an enemy harvester the harvester stops moving, and doesn´t return to the enemy refinery... so the bad guys end up broke :p

I missed this one also (Don't know how guess I was too busy playing the other C&C games and I was really into shooters at the time I suppose) and I was recently searching around to see if I could find Dune 2k and Emp Battle for Dune but I haven't had any luck. Any of you guys know any place that still has em for sale? :confused:

I enjoyed playing Emperor Battle for Dune, never played Dune or Dune 2000.

Go with Dune 2000. You should be able to find it and Emperor on ebay.

I liked Dune 2 a bit more because of the midi music. The music didn't quite have that punch on Dune 2000 for some reason. Also I thought the 2D sprite movies were better than the live action for some reason. :D But Dune 2000 was fun still

Roland SoundCanvas FTW!
I still have my SCB-55 and MT-32! I'm hoping I can build another old computer and finally get to use them again!

Dune 2 was the Great Legendary Original, the very first RTS. I played the hell out of it, my Dad even played it, the only game he played half as much as Civ.exe. There was only one problem with Dune2 -- I kept seeing C&C and WC as knock-offs, and thus never played them. Dune 2000 lacked some of that magic that Dune 2 had -- the interface might've been easier to use, the units may have had grouping, but it lacked that special magic that Dune 2 had.

Oldskool Westwood FTW.

even how more dramatic the original intro narration was now that I think about it was better.

"Dune.......Land.....of Sand......Home....of the Spice"

I think in Dune 2000 it was said like it's any ol place "Dune. Land of sand and the spice. Welcome!" ;)

I was just going through my old CD's and found my copy of Dune2000. Anyone who wants it, pm me and paypal me a buck or two for shipping and I'll fire it off.

Dune 2 was actually one of the first Genesis games I ever played.

Fun times. I go for Dune 2.

You can track down a copy of Dune 2 on one of the many abandonware sites around the Net and load it up on DOSBox. It runs fine, although I recommend forcing OpenGL to correct the graphical problems you'll have running it on default configuration.

Just open up dosbox.conf and change the line where it says

output=surface

to

output=opengl

and enjoy! If you haven't played it, you really should, that was the beginning of all things RTS.
