Oh shit I think I hit something cool. Out at the office equipment shop there are 2 or 3 somewhat heavy, somewhat large copy machines. Better than the last one I found. At least one of them has a nice little lcd screen on it. Problem is, they are still in the fucking dumpster! I just couldn't get a good grip on any of them to pull them out. Now I am just waiting for my roommate to get back to see if he wants to help me get them out. Also, some shit is leaking out of the bottom of my car. I heard an occasional clanking when I was out tonight, and looked underneath the ex when I got back. Nothing is dripping, but there is certainly some moisture there. Looks like I know what I'll be doing this weekend. FUCK.

Oh, and for whoever was asking, oddly enough, none of the computers I found had AT power supplies. None of the computers worked, either(which, I guess, is why there were on the side of the street).

Update:
Well holy shit. I have outdone myself. There were a couple copiers in the dumpster and they were fucking HEAVY. My roommate and I were able to lift one up just enough to get it on the edge of the dumpster, then we just let it fall. We dragged it over to my explorer and somehow got it in the back. But my fucking door wouldn't close! I have a computer tied down in the back that plays music, and it was keeping the copier from getting far enough in. I ended up just tieing the hatch with some rope. I drove about 20 mph the whole way home. Also, when my roommate and I first went out, there were three cop cars about 200 feet down the road from the store and they were searching through a pickup truck on the side of the road. Damn bitches. That son of a bitch copier is still in the back of my car. I don't know what the hell I am going to do with it. All I really wanted is the lcd screen, which I probably won't even be able to interface to. Motors should be good, too. I am planning on making an xy engraving table out of some old printer parts. Shit I'm tired and I'm rambling. bah.

Hey, anyone that lives in Boulder/ Denver area want to get together and try the local college before springbreak is over? Plus I think I know of a few places to look at.

Hey I go to school with a guy from Tyler TX. Pretty crazy dude.

Well this week is bulky item pickup for the east side of town so I got some good stuff. Today I got a couple Echostar satellite receivers(no cards:(), an old mac that doesn't look like it is working, a nice scsi scanner, a canon bjc-620 colour inkjet printer(looks like it just needs ink), and an old panasonic colour dot matrix printer. I think that's it. There were a lot of junkers out driving around. Some dirty fucking couple picked up a nasty old matress. Crazy fucks.

how old is the mac? I could use some stuff from it.

edit: how old is the scanner? useable?

Dane

The mac is a performa 6300cd from around 95-96 I believe. Some of the cables inside were cut and fucked up, so I have already gutted it. I have the motherboard, 1.2 gig hard drive, cdrom drive, floppy drive, and power supply. I have pictures of the stuff if you want to see anything. If not then no big deal. It will just be going to ebay(and then probably the dumpster).
edit: scanner is an epson perfection 636, but I think I am going to keep that. I just won a scsi cable for $.01 about a minute ago. :)

just got this the other night

I'm guessing its a 159

thanks. I'll use it as a rockboard unless I can find one more, then make a talbe, or a bench out of them.

I scored five NCD19r Thin Client X-terminals last night (19" monitors with built-in network/KBD/mouse jacks;
I could have had a few more, but as I was pulling the last one out of the dumpster some indian guys walking by saw me with a monitor in hand and ran over...
one of them jumped right into the dumpster (no hesitation) and started hauling out monitors and passing them to his two friends, and I guess there weren't any more screens left because then he started pulling out garbage bags too (getting garbage juice all over himself!)
So the guy started freaking out and yelling loudly, probably because he really smelled like he had jumped into a dumpster, so I figured it was a good time to take off before the moron attracts some rentacops... there were only some filthy PS/2 keyboards left as far as I could tell, and they didn't look like anything I'd want to put my fingers on without disinfecting them first. When I think back I think I might have seen some CAT5 cable and mice that were used with the X-terms, too bad because I could have used those.

Here's a google image that looks exactly like mine, except I have five of them of course:
ncd19r.jpg

I lent my digicam to my gf, but I'll get it back soon.
When I take pics I'l try and stack all the screens Matrix/Nebuchadnezzar - style

I was thinking I could put an X-terminal in almost every room... kitchen counter, next to the toilet, laundry room...
then you could check email, surf the web, write a killer PHP code snippet, etc. whenever / wherever you feel like it.
The screens could be stealth mounted in cabinets or even mounted in the wall, and they wouldn't make any noise at all.

I'm also balancing these benefits from the enjoyment I'd get from throwing a couple of them off the top of the tallest building I can find.

Damn, you can't throw those off a building!!!! If you've got an extra, PIF!

Yeah I could see that this dumpster diving action has some potential. I used to work at a tek research facility. Anyway they had all this old stuff that they had auctioned off to employees. (Scored me a comp chair for 3 bones). Anyway some of this stuff had a minimum bid price so some of it didn't get sold. So several days after the auction I was out in the warehouse and I see this pallet of monitors, printers, keyboards, scanners, and all this other crap. So me and another guy ask what their doin with this stuff and they explain that their throwin it away. I chirped in that that was stupid if some of this stuf worked. They said that it was company policy to trash the stuff and that if they gave it away they would be showing favoritism. So I pulled the car around and mad me self a favorite anyhoo. I didn't wan't to be loading up stuff for too long and I wasn't sure if some of the stuff was working anyway. They had this 22" monitor there with the 3 connectors. The thing was huge and wouldn't fit in me car. So my buddy got that. The last thing i wanted was more crap for me small apppt. I scored an industrial network printer and thats about that. My buddy got two monitors. As it turned out te 22" monitor was bling bling. He fired it right up. Me on the otherhand; I had a friggin 200 pound printer that needed a laser cartridge thingy. At the time I didn't know that it was almost cheaper to buy a new printer then replace the dam cartridge. So back to the dumpster it went. Wich I had grabbed the monitors!

Yea, I think tonight is the night. Ive done nothing in school today besides read up on some nice spots. Ive had AMAZING luck with staples lately. Ive found so much good stuff back there....too much to type really. I'll report my findings later on tonight....er...tomorrow morning :D;)

Just got back from my promised outing, heres what I picked up:

1 Queen Size Aerobed Inflatable/Portable Bed w/ cover (perfect condition): $150

1 Silver and Black desk Lamp (plugged in, works like a charm): $25

1 Tall Glass Vase: $16.99

1 Glass Water Dispenser: $30

1 Laptop Carrying Case (small knife slit in back): $30

1 Desginer suitcase w/ wheels (it was part of a 3 set, other 2 pieces were missing): $30

1 Car Cell Phone Kit (still not sure exactly what it does): $????

2 Black and Silver Picture Frames (Brand New, In package): $15

1 Black "Picture Tree" has three hooks, and 3 frames: $15

So were looking at over $300 worth of stuff, in about 3-4 hours of our time. Its a beautiful thing really. Besides an EXTREMELY close call with the cops it was an awesome time. If your interested in anything I got...lemme know. I'd be set if I was homeless...

found another memorystick at work again, this one is only 16mb... but still, 2 memory sticks in the same place... i call it the memory stick garden..

Well, I read up to page 80, and couldnt stand it anymore. I went DDiving for myself, and did a nice job I must add!

I followed all the courtesy rules, put everything pack the way it was, such as closed/open status, picked up any trash I dropped, and that sort of thing. Hit a BUNCH of places..

Most places, including small stores, had compactors, strangely enough, which sucked major arse. Other places was just ALOT of paper, or big ass bags of plastic.

The only place we had any luck with was Media Play, at which we found a nice dumpster FULL of magazines, with the cover ripped off of course! They are good for reading though. Going back weds to see if we can find ourselves some better stuff. Thats all we found. Out of like... 40 stores and mini strip malls, that was it. Pier 1 had NOTHING.. What am I missing there?

We were behind a long strip, and found a treadmill, yes, a fricken treadmill, it was too heavy so we couldnt get that one. We drove down to get to the next dumpster when a car pulls in at the far end behind us, and starts creeping down towards us, so we keep driving, and when we got to the end I told my friend who was also a n0ob, just to pull off to the side and see waht the car did.

Well I'm sure you can all guess, it was a cop. He stopped behind us, my friend started wigging but me being ex-white trash, I wasnt worried. Gave him a bullshit sotry about how we were looking for boxes for our friend who was moving and we were out so late because we were college students and didnt have time during the daytime to get out and look. He ran our licences, and the car registration, came back and was all nice and said that perhaps we shouldtry and squeeze in some time during the daytime for this stuff, I said "Thanks for your time" and we were off! My friend decided to call it a night after that though, but we are going this wedsday, theres ALOT more to cover!!!

Great stuff though, it was an expierence, I got to jump in a few dumpsters and get used to the feeling and expierence the first cop drop during a dive.

garzilla: where did you go? Perhaps a name of a store? And any suggested tips before I go weds?

Yea my advice would be to hit up some industrial parks. For example, the Pfizer HQ is right in my neighborhood. So while me and my buddies were out one night DDing I decided to take a look. So we drove in, parked around back. Took a look behind the dumpsters and found a STASH of 2-3 year old Samsung monitors....WORKING! Companies/busniesses tend to want the latest of the latest technology, and when they get it they get rid of their old stuff....which really isn't all that old. Im now selling these monitors for about $80-$100 each!

I personally have had some AMAZING luck with Staples. Ive found all kinds of good stuff including a leather executive chair that was thrown out because it was missing ONE caster. Found one lying around on the ground outside the dumpster....good as new! Also around 50 rolls of packing tape! I got some ideas for these:D. A few copies of Norton Internet Security 2003 with Serials and everything!

Also try Linens N' Things. Ive found some cool stuff for my room. Lamps, cool picture frames and that $160 Aero bed I mentioned earlier. Dont waste your time with the big chains....Best Buy..etc. Check out Pier 1 again, and this time get a little more dirty. If you wanna find the good stuff you gotta dig....I know by experience.

Hit up some car audio places also. Ive found pairs of door speakers and stuff like that.

Oh and in case you have some more run-ins with the cops. Carry a few cardboard boxes in your trunk and sit em next to your car. So that way if a cop does pull up on you....it wont look so suspicious...

Good luck and let us know if you find anything kick ass...:D

If he asks to look in your trunk or search your car poliitely explain that you are wel aware of your civil liberties and you don't believe anything you have done warrants any such activity.

I don't know about the US, but in Canada, if you tried that with the RCMP, they'd follow you until you made a traffic violation (for instance: Not stopping for 3 seconds at a stop sign, not signalling far enough back), then they'd pull you over, and ask for your license, as well as search your car. If you tried telling him no, he'd arrest you.

Of course, he might just sit and watch you, and when you stood there, he's ask for ID, as well as search your car for 'suspicious activity'.

EDIT: Daaang. Some of you found some really nice stuff.

So I went again last night, it was fun.

Found a few places I can regularly hit, heres how it went down.

We dropped by media play and checked that out 'cause we got some nice stuff before, this time we found a filing cabinet, small plastic one but I needed one so we grabbed it. Next we grabbed alot of cardboard and headed out. Stopped by this business place and pulled round back, driver pulled out cardboard and set it next to car and we both proceeded to rip open bags and start lookin through. He immediately found a keyboard, and as I ripped open every bag in the thing, a cop rolls by in the parking lot next to the one we were in, and driver here pulls a big cardboard box out of the dumpster at the exact right moment, and the cop sees him and takes off, never to return. We left.
We proceeded to another street, hit alot of other places, and ended up hitting this momandpop computer shop, found 3 14" monitors, not sure if thye work, we put them in the trunk of his car, I'll try 'em out another time. Then we left and hit this law office, and I found a great potential spot. There was a computer chair in there, a floor mat thing for your chair, alot of discs and some other stuff, but driver was in a hurry 'cause he's as nervous as a cat near the ocean and we take off. That was that.

All in all I scored a filing cabinet, keyboard, 3x monitors that I'm not sure whether they work, OH! And where I found the monitors I also found this 'Telephone Power Supply', I'm not sure if anyone will be able to use it, I thougt maybe some modders here could find something useful to do with that.... I'll post pics of that later..

anybody here live in central VA? i know the thread-starter Yoda lives within an hour of me...holler at me. i would love to go dd'ing with anybody, i've got a car, i can drive wherever. one question, though: how can you tell if there's a compactor in a dumpster?

You just look at the thing., Its huge, taller than any dumpster, or not, and longer than any dumpster, its connected to the building, Drive behind a best buy and you'll see one.

alright, thanks. i worked at circuit city for a while and the dumpster/compactor was actually inside of the warehouse. we only threw away boxes, though

went on my first dive today. drove around to BB, Target, Famous Footwear, other stores, and some warehouses in the area. No luck whatsoever. More than half the dumpsters I checked were completely empty, must have been picked up recently :( I got a whole lot of warehouses in my area, I guess i'll try my luck next weekend.

Dont bother with big places, as they say. Even with the extremely remote chance they might be regular dumpsters, its not worth your time. Try small stores, mom and pop stores.

is anyone else having problems connecting to dumpsterworld.com? I can't get the page to load.

Hi All, I was driving home and saw a box on the side of the street so i snatched it up. Tried to fire it up...fans spin but no post beep and no video, damn! So i crack it open and inside i get

1) ElPina 90892 mobo (4 PCI, 3 ISA, onboard sound and vid...)
2) 2 sticks of ram. One is 16 mb not sure about the other
3) 2gb quantum HDD (I tested this, it works, has a clean install of win 98 on it)
3) PCI modem
4) Random other plugs (USB, SERIAL, ect)
5) Floppy drive
6) Cyrix 233mhc proc
7) 24x cd rom
8) 200 watt PS
9) Case

W00t! Now to get this darn thing to work

EDIT: One of the sticks of Ram was bad. Pulled it and it works like a charm!

EDIT #2: Cleaned off the 2nd stick and it works!! for a total of 24Mb of ram!!!!

Yesterday I went with a friend up to the shopping center near my house. Since it was easter, everything except the grocery store was closed. We walked behing the place and I checked out some of the dumpsters. There is a CompUSA up there, unfortunately nothing in the OPEN dumpster except boxes and plywood. I will go check again sometime though.

grateway managed to toss a pentium 4 2.40 ghz computer for me! :D aside from the case being trashed, everything else runs!

2.40 ghz pentium 4
256 mb of ram (now has 512 thanks to them throwing out 2 sticks of 256 mb ram!)
40 gig hard disk
