Hi there,

I'm considering building a dual Xeon system with twin E5440 CPUs in the future. But I'm lost as to which motherboard I should be considering.

My only requirements would be:

1x PCIe x16 slot
1x PCIe x8 slot
1x PCI-X slot

Any recommendations on motherboard? Would I need an outsize case to contain it?

You are talking Intel 5000 series (I think) server board. With the mulit core cpus there are no longer enthusiast mulit-socket boards. PM a mod and ask him to move your post down to the Multiprocessor Systems forum where the heavy iron guys hang out. ;)

You'll need a case that can take an E-ATX or SSI motherboard, most that take one will take the other. For the 54XX series xeons you'll need a 5400 or 5100 series board. So until they start trickling into retail, it's kinda hard to recommend one.

I've only seen the Tyan S5392 for sale yet, ewiz and atacom both had them at some point, but it's the lowest end of the Seaburg boards.

Specs:

‧ Supports future Quad- and Dual-Core IntelR XeonR Processors,
including Next Generation 45nm based processors
‧ IntelR Seaburg + 6321ESB, 1066/1333 MHz FSB
‧ (4) DDRII 240-pin FBDIMM
‧ (2) 64-bit/133MHz PCI-X, (2) PCI-E x16 (gen 2),
  (1) PCI-E x8, (1) PCI
‧ (1) GbE support (IntelR 82564)
‧ (6) SATA2 ports support RAID 0/1/10/5
‧ IPMI 2.0 by Tyan SMDC M3291
‧ CEB
