dual server... current worth?

Ok so I have a few machines in my house and want to consolidate..... I figure if I can sell off a few things and get $$$ to build a better machine.. can run vmware and not need all the machines...

I know prices have changed recently but what do you think the following would be a good price to ask for? I will put the price that i paid next to each item.. I know they are not worth that anymore...


case - $50
supermicro s2dge mb - $300
2 x piii xeon 700mhz w/2mb cache each - $160 x 2
1gb ram (2x512mb pc 100) - $100
elsa synergy ii 32mb agp - $50
I forget what hard drives are in it...
 
You'd probably be lucky to get 150 for it. There is no way you could get 300 for that motherboard. Older dual systems like that are strictly enthusiast systems. Only the hardcore hardware tend to care about, buy, or use them. Sometimes business will buy parts at extortive prices but that's pretty rare.

For the prices you have there I could build a low end dual opteron system that would perform much much better.

Or a system based of the pentium 805D(dual core 2.66 ghz i believe)
 
To give some sense of scale, I bought 4 Pentium III's at 733mhz from the fs forum for $25.

PIII Xeons - Maybe $15 a piece

1GB PC 100 - $30

Synergy II, maybe $10.

You may be best off selling it as a bundle for like 100 bucks or something like that.

If you actually read the post, you'd realize that the prices he has are what HE paid, not what he's asking.
 
home automation server? what's it do exactly? curious minds inquire...

...as for price, I wouldn't expect it to pay off the purchase of a new computer. as many people here are saying, expect 100 for it (give or take).
 
You'd probably get 100-150 (depending on hard drives) on ebay for that machine. To put it in perspective: 700mhz xeons can be had for less than 10 bucks nowadays. Infact I just got 4 x 700mhz/2mb cache xeons @ $7 a piece.
 
I'd say about $100 is top end as well. I picked up a dual P3 1GHz machine with 512 MB and a 36 GB SCSI drive for $70 a few months ago.

during xmas my computer turns on my xmas lights in each room..
I have a motion sensor in the garage..turns on the lights when you walk in there and after 1 minute turns the lights off if it doesnt detect motion...
also from a web page I can control it
SOOO MUCH YOU CAN DO!!!!!!

right now my machine is down.. lost a network card or could give you the guest login to the web front.......

someday put a sprinkler system in and control that too.....

hate to hijack, but I'm also trying to add computer integration into my sprinkler system. I was trying to think what else I can do...thanks for the ideas!

no problem man.. nice thing about this is you can do it from a web browser.... set jobs up....
same as heat/ac control.. havent done that yet either...

i was going to try and sell both the machines I listed in here to build a better box for my automation server... but guess I will be waiting to get cash up and build it later....

my friend has the exact same machine that he's selling, maybe even higher in specs.


your looking at 100-150 for that setup. hell i think $150 would be an incredibly hard sale... $100 would be around the price for all that.
 
You could probably run VMWare server with 2 virtual machines decently (decent for home use) on that machine, no?

I have my machine running server 2003 active directory, dns, dhcp, iis
1 vmware running server 2003 and Altiris 6.5 Notification server and sql 2000 sp3
1 vmware running server 2003 as Altiris Deployment server, PXE boot, sql 2000 sp3

(and before you disagree, I work with ASP all day, every day. It works, but takes too much $$$$ for what you get!)

Consider that multiprocessing computers depreciate like crazy because when businesses start to upgrade they unload all that power of yesteryears servers to swapmarkets and recyclers for dirt prices just to get rid of them.

not entirely true. the company i work for uses them untill there absoultly worthless.. when you have 3000+ computers, they all count. Just todaay I worked on a desktop/workstation running dully 800 P3s and SCSI 18gb hdd

Are you serious? Ive seen much older crustier hardware than that on ebay selling for far more :(. $200.00 shipped, Id go for that :eek:

well I got $300 for it.. so guess i was lucky...

sold it and bought the following...

HP Proliant DL380G2
2 x 1.4ghz piii
1.5gb ram
2x36gb - 2x73gb hot swap drives
onboard 5i raid

I have since sold the 2x36gb drives and 1x73gb drive....
so now i have
3x73gb in raid 5
3x146gb in raid 5

also picked up a Storageworks TL891 tape library... will post that in another forum as i have a question....
 
Out of curiosity, why did you sell the faster system and then buy a slower one?

Wow! I thought I did awesome on a local deal for a dual P3-866Mhz for $50.:cool:

There must not be much IT liquidation going on in these parts though - most sub-GHz servers are still going for $200-300+... with a single cpu in a dually. :rolleyes:

Yeah, put that up on the boards and I doubt it will last more than a day or two at most ;)
