I found some dual Opteron 2.0GHz servers for sale, they're used obviously. I'm thinking about picking one or two up. They're complete, dual Opteron 2GHz (forget the number, but obviously a 200 sequence), have 1GB of registered DDR-333 and 120GB PATA hard drives. I'm guessing they saw duty in HPC or something similar.

Anyway, those will make the deadlines on any of the SMP work units won't they? I'll be running Linux (Xubuntu to be exact).
 
the only ones i could think of that would maybe be close would be the 240-244s, but I would imagine even those should have no problem in dual slot form....my A64 4800 stock far exceeds the deadlines, so even the lower end optys should be fine...

since you specifically mention 2.0 ghz, it'll either be a 246 in dual single core format, or a 270 in dual dual core format (that'd be real nice :p), so those should be fine

 
Yeah, I have a 4800+ too and it has no problems, so I figured -400MHz and I'd still be ok. I was just wanting to see if anyone out there with a 3800+ or 170 could confirm.
 
Any stock speed Athlon64 dual core, Opteron dual core or dual processor Opteron system should have no trouble making deadlines on SMP units.

Just remember, unless you are getting a really good deal on them it may not be worth the money if you put together a dual or quad core Core2 based Intel. The AMDs don't hold a candle to the Intels right now.

C2D E6400@3.4Ghz=2300PPD on 1760 point WUs.
X2 4000+@3.0Ghz=1371PPD on 1760 point WUs.

Opterons at the same speed as my X2 would probably do a bit better because of the larger cache as my X2 only has 512k per core and most of the SMP WUs love lots of cache.

And no, I'm not going to drop my overclock to tell you what it would do. :p

 
I'm another one to say unless they are a very good deal, stay away.

Each CPU will need ~100 watts at 100% load so your looking at ~350 watts for the whole system for under 1,000 PpD.
A cheap C2D system will only pull in ~130 watts for ~1,333 PpD at the same speed.

Ps. If they're dual-dual then its another matter.

I'd have to agree with Tigerbiten not to purchase these servers unless they are 4-core systems and/or you can OC them. My old 246 Opterons were OC to 2.4GHz. I replaced them earlier this year with two 280s@2.8GHz for ~1800PPD. If you can get these processors somewhere in the mid-2GHz range, they might barely be worth it, but only barely. Then again, it all depends on the price, doesn't it? ;)
