Dual Hyperhreaded Processors in UD!

Well, I'm back in the DC thing after an abscence caused by a new job, and I decided to join UD since ya'll are kicking so much ass in F@H.

Anyway, I loaded the client on my Dual 2.66 Hyperthreaded XEON system, and it is only running about 25% utlilization in my Task Manager CPU usage. There are currently 4 CPU usage history windows with varying levels of activity in them.

So, what's the best way to get full usage out of my system for UD?

I might be wrong, but you have to make 4 folders (UD1, UD2...) and download the UD .exe file into each one.

Then when you configure them, you give them 4 IDs, so UD1 is Machine ID 1, next is 2, and so on...

Also, check hardfolding.com or the stick in this forum. I know there is a guide to setting up F@H on Hyperthreading Procs.

If I remember correctly, the workaround doesn't work.

You can only run one instance of UD on a machine. It doesn't matter how many processors the machine has. As previously mentioned, you can also run one instance of Folding along with the one instance of UD.

The only other option I could think of it multiple Virtual PC's on one box, with each one being given affinty to a certain processor, but I would image the overhead would be extreme.

Actually, I ran UD in Vmware for a while. It's not a terribly bad performance drop - about 15% - from running it in VMware versus on the same machine with native Windows. Since VMware server is now free :)D) I'd say it's worth a try. It'll take a reinstall of Windows, and a good deal of ram, but it'll get you another instance.

 
Just run an instance of UD, and one of F@H Bigpackets. Running instances on the virtual procs isnt worth it - only a 10-15% gain in PPD.
 
Well, I turned off HT to simplify things.

Now, I am trying to figure out how to set processor affinity i the UD client.

Can that only be set during install, or is there someplace to change it when it is running?

I would leave Hyperthreading enabled. I haven't found it to be much good on my work P4 2.8 but it's better than nothing in most cases since it has it.

Also, I don't think you need to set processor affinity. Windows should automatically send one thread to one processor and one thread to the other processor. I've never set it on my dually PII 266 for folding and have never had a problem.

 
Well, it took about a half hour of tinkering, but whaduyaknow, it seems to be working. Got 5 gig o XEONs happily at 100%.

The UD client is setup to specifically defeat SMP, so you must set processor affinity to keep the 2 processes from spying each other. Also, HT is only a help if the program is SMP aware. Having HT on simply increases the complexity to work around the SMP issue. I would have had to run 4 instances of the program to get full usage, and then would have lost proc. power to the HT overhead of juggleing the multiple threads.

Hope they get their damn SMP client done some day. You would think that with FREAKING IBM as a sponsor they could figure out how to make an SMP client after all these YEARS.

Well, there is now 13 more Ghz for the cause. Well, 11.5. Have to wait till the morning to borg my daughters comp.

So, anyone got a MB that will work with a 2.66 533 P4? Hmmm, may need some memory too. I'll have to look through the pile of junk.
