those HE versions listed on the AMD site seem nice. I wonder how they overclock.

The HE's are Socket 940 and are not meant to be overclocked. They are for server-grade computers and workstations. You want a Socket 939 if you're going to overclock.

Well, not a single chip is meant to be overclocked, people do it anyway. Considering that the HE version probably run at a very low VCore, I would expect them to have some headroom.. possibly.

It's not even about that. It's like how people buy OCZ's Titanium series RAM just because it's the most expensive. They aren't built for that kind of use. On top of all of this, the Socket 940 Opterons require ECC/registered RAM, as well as a Socket 940 motherboard, which I guarantee you will have next to none of the overclocking amenities you're used to, such as voltage changes and dividers.

heh..thnx for the hlp people...

and for the people who were flaming at me let them i dont really care..i couldnt find anything on the net and its not a crime to ask people here because theyre helpful enough adn polite enough to reply sensibly

thnx mod

i was thinking of buying the opteron 170 for my new comp (whats the expected oc, seeing as all the good cores have gone?)...btw if i buy from newegg will they ship to england? i think its a no but no harm in asking :) :p

dude, look on these same forums.

You may have to go back a couple pages, but the opteron dual cores got MOBBED with stats, and how people did.

Just run a forum search for opteron overclock

Seriously, bro.

Overclocking is NEVER an exact science. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

That said, the latest 170's are probably good for 2.4GHz on the stock cooler, and 2.6-2.7 on higher-end air cooling. Water can get you past 2.8, I think, and phase should put you past 3. :)

No, they won't, but microdirect.co.uk, dabs.com and scan.co.uk will. overclockers.co.uk also.

I think the 170's can do better than that. My 165 gets to 2.7ghz using my TR XP-90.

hmph...opterons in england cost around £300...cheapest ones :( do you think i should opt for a more expensive opteron 170 because the core might be better?

i know overclocking is not an exact science, but some cores are better than others, all im asking is are the newest cores good to overclock to around 2.7ghz on GOOD air cooling? because i know the older ones could hit around 3 ghz

You can get an opteron 165 for about 220-230 quid listed on froogle. As long as your mobo can do >300HTT, you're looking at a potential 2.7ghz.

i dno which one to get...the 170 has a higher multiplier so i blieve ill be able to get higher with my ram running 1:1 with it and thast what i want to do...

If you're planning on hitting 2.7 ghz+ with the 170, at a 1:1 ratio your ram will have to be able to run at 270mhz. If your ram can't do that, you'll be running a divider anyway.

From what I hear, there's little-to-no performance impact from running a divider anyway.

so basically you guys are telling me to get the 165? is there any oc difference between these two?

Yes, if your mobo does not support a high HTT, you will want to get the 170. It is possible that the 170 does OC better than the 165, but I do not have sufficient data on that, I am sure that a look into the Dual Core OC database would help you with that.

and yes, I am telling you to get a 165.

thnx...eclipse pointed me to to a good dfi board for overclocking that should be able to hit a fsb of over 300...so im going to choose the opty 165 and get sli gt's :)
