dual core, hyperthreading and windows

it used to be NT4 was licenced for 1-2 CPU and then a more expensive ver for more CPUs which is fine if you have a hyperthreading or a dual system. windows "sees" a hyperthreading CPU as 2 cpus but does it really count them that way?

there must be people now who have a dual xeons with hyperthreading and their task manager shows 4 cpus. do you need to have a different version of windows for that? or does XP just count actual physical CPUs no matter how many cores or virtual CPUs they have?

I can see the day soon when a desktop could easilly have 8 CPU in task manager (2x dual core + hyperthreading = 8 apparent CPUs) will it cause problems with windows licence?

and once they do dual core. they wont bother upping the speed that much it will be 4 core 8 core 16 core etc :) it will be great! (except for the ill fated VIA low power "3 1/2 core")
 
Ive read an intel paper on how hyperthreading works, the bios must be hyperthreading enabled for what im describing to take place.

Say you have 2 hyperthreading cpu's the bios will report them to the operating system in the following order, physical 1, physical 2, hyper 1, hyper 2. If its an old motherboard it would report physical 1, hyper 1, etc.

So if you have a 4 processor smp limit with 4 hyperthreaded cpus it should ignore the hyperthreaded cpus if the bios supports hyperthreading, if not it will ignore the last two processors, which is bad.

As for the operating system, it doesnt need to support hyperthreading, but it must support the number of processors your attempting to use.

afaik, dual cores arent dual processors in the eyes of the operating system, but I could be wrong.
 
in that case you could have 4 real and 8 virtual processors in a "dual" system. it would be awesome once they figure out some way to store your data in something better then a stupid slow electromechanical hard drive. and screw 2 meg cache for all that they will have to bring it up a bit.
 
the argument now is "what constitutes a dual processor system." although a dual core chip has two processors it is physically only one. also what if the chip is like a dual core but not two full physical cores (parts of the execution engine)? see what i mean? there is much debate on the physical and logical aspects. exspect this to get a little interesting. although i think that logically it [dual core] will be considered dual system. hyperthreading is not a worry-it can never be argued as physical and there will be plenty of room in the processor support amount. personally, i think multi core is the only way to cure a lower micron process.
 
As far as licensing is concerned only physical CPUs are counted. A machine with dual HT processors can use standard retail license of XP Pro which supports up to 2 CPUs.
